A Little Gem of a book!!!

Finally a great little gem of a book by some amazing and talented ladies! Transitional Wisdom is chocked full of short letters to our former selves. There is some thing for everyone -transition or not -either pre or post. Trans people seem pretty smart and successful. Doctors, Lawyers, Indian Cheif. Trans women have no choice other than succed given these obstacles. The trail is now well beaten for others to follow. Wishing you success. The letters clearly illustrate this. Thoughly enjoyable a good quick read. It is honest and unabashed. Enyoy!

The year 1968 is memorable for any number of reasons, science writer Zimmerman reminds us, not the least of which was the historic flight of Apollo 8, the first manned space flight to slip out of Earth's gravitational tethers. Apollo 8, with Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders aboard, blasted off in late December of 1968, its intention to journey beyond Earth's orbit, slip into a lunar orbit, then escape again, and return. Its success was a momentous occasionthe frontiers of space had been effectively pushed out, way outalthough it was overshadowed six months later by the actual lunar landing. Zimmerman, a science and technology writer who has contributed to American Heritage, the Sciences, and other publications, has chosen two aspects of the Apollo 8 mission to emphasize. First, he depicts a space program then still the venue of the hero/ace pilot who, sacrificing family priorities and personal safety, was the Cold Warrior nonpareil. In relating this, Zimmerman situates the flight within the context of that electrifying and appalling yearthe Tet Offensive, the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, student uprisings, the Chicago Democratic convention, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedywhen more than a spacecraft appeared to be spinning out of orbit. Zimmerman keeps in check this potentially hyperbolic drama, giving it a nice steady rhythm, but he loses that touch when he goes after his second theme, attempting to infuse the event with righteousness. It showed the world, Zimmerman claims, an ``American vision of moral individuality, religious tolerance and mutual respect,'' though its difficult to see the space race as an expression of such respect or to decipher the meaning of ``moral individuality'' in this context. Zimmerman does realize that perhaps the most lasting achievement of Apollo 8 is a photograph of Earthrise over the Moon. A wonderful story, poorly told.

What an adventure was Apollo 8!
In many ways, the first manned translunar voyage surpassed Apollo 11 and represented the greatest single leap forward in the US space programme.
Sadly, Zimmerman falls far short of doing the mission justice. Only half the book seems solely devoted to it; the remainder is filled with a potted history of the Cold War and uninteresting insights into the religous lives of the three protagonists.
The former has been done much, much better elsewhere; the latter served no purpose.
In the author's defence, ommitting these two aspects of the book would have left it weighing in somewhere around 150 pages (and no, I haven't counted) which possibly explains their inclusion - it's not a long book. Add a peppering of typos and errors of fact and grammar and you have a book that only the most ardent Apollo fan would list as a must-have.

An important story, but I was disappointed.

I thought the book a decent retelling of the Apollo 8 mission, but I was hoping for more. I would have liked to know more of the mission itself: techical details, life in space, etc. I think setting the flight in the context of the sixties was a good idea but some of the "detours" are too long, for example, student protests at Columbia University receive more attention than the Apollo 1 fire. I also did not like the polemic at the end.

Genesis is a very well written account of the historic flight of Apollo 8. The text is concise and the story is well paced. The only real detraction from an otherwise great account,is the author's seeming need to infuse his own political views, as is very evident in the final chapter.

About the Author
Tran Thi Minh Phuoc spent ten months in a refugee camp in Malaysia before coming to America. In 1984, after a 50-hour Greyhound trip from California, she reached Minnesota, where she found life's most precious treasures: education and a safe environment. She became Minnesota's first Vietnamese librarian, and has been an active storyteller for over 20 years.

Nguyen Thi Hop and Nguyen Dong began their careers as young professional artists in the South Vietnam of the 1960s, exhibiting in Paris, Taiwan and in cities in Germany and the US as well as in Saigon. They have illustrated books published in numerous countries and have frequently illustrated the work of renowned Vietnamese Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh.

Finally a great English-written Vietnamese folktales book

Awesome book for any curious mind that wants to know about the popular Vietnamese folktales. These are all of my favorite childhood folktales/fairytale that my mom had told me or I've read about! Brought back so much memories!!! The stories are very close to what I remember. The writings are beautiful and and illustrations are gorgeously detailed and colorful. Now I finally can read them to my non-bilingual kids who have very limited Vietnamese vocabulary.

Amazing Introduction to Sowing Beginner to Intermediate

I used this book in my very first costume design class in college, however when I was finished with the class I gave it to my sister. She uses many of the skills she learned in this book to make purses and my niece's clothes and costumes (my niece is rather tall and curvy for her age and we have a hard time finding clothes that are appropriate for her). I made all different size dresses to send to African orphans using this book!
It would be a great addition to any homeschool home ed class as well.

This book is great for step by step instruction

This book is great for step by step instruction. It has space to attach your samples of your attempted work so it doubles as a workbook. I love this book because it taught me a lot about the basics. I know how to measure someone now, I know how to a lot of different stitches and their purposes based off this book. I have since gone on to sew pillows, puppets, gloves, full cosplays, and more. I have even shared my knowledge with others. Very good book to teach a complete novice how to sew.

Learning what you already know

I knew some of the basic stitches the book teaches but this goes over it in more detail than I was taught.
I was slightly disappointed when the book came in (I knew it was going to be a binder as I saw this in our school book store before I bought it) but the pages were not hole punched properly and all of the top holes needed to be reinforced with those round stickers.
This book was required for class and after only getting through chapter one and two I know I've learned a lot more. I like the set up of the opening chapters, and the chapter discussing measurements is set up ok. It was a bit out of order from the measurement sheet that comes with the book, but the descriptions of what needed to be measured was great.
Overall I think it was a good purchase, and this book will be kept with my sewing kit at all times. The ability to attach samples of the stitches is a nice touch that will let me know, ok yeah I did this before I can do it again.

Kerry J. Howe is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of New Mexico and former principal engineer at MWH. Hand is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan Technological University. He has authored or coauthored over 130 technical publications including six textbooks, two patents, and eight copyrighted software programs. John C. Crittenden is Director of the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems as well as Hightower Chair and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. R. Rhodes Trussell is the founder of Trussell Technologies and former senior vice president at MWH. He has served as Chair of the Water Science and Technology Board for the National Academies and, in 2010, was awarded the prestigious A. P. Black Research Award from the American Water Works Association. George Tchobanoglous is Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Davis. He is the author or coauthor of more than 500 technical papers and a number of textbooks, including Wastewater Engineering: Treatment and Reuse and Water Reuse: Issues, Technologies, and Applications.

It took too long to get the book

The book was in excellent conditions and at a reasonable price. The only thing I did not like was that it took too long to get it. I ordered all my books for the school semester and this is the one that I ordered first and was the last one I got.

About the Author
J. Scott Duvall (PhD. Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is professor of New Testament at Ouachita Baptist University. He is the coauthor with George H. Guthrie of Biblical Greek Exegesis: A Graded Approach to Learning Intermediate and Advanced Greek and with Terry G. Carter and J. Daniel Hays of the textbook Preaching God's Word: A Hands on Approach to Preparing, Developing and Delivering the Sermon.

J. Daniel Hays (ThM, Dallas Theological Seminary; PhD, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is dean of the Pruet School of Christian Studies and professor of Old Testament at Ouachita Baptist University. He is the author of From Every People and Nation, and he has coauthored Grasping God's Word; Preaching God's Word; Journey into God’s Word; The Story of Israel: A Biblical Theology; Iraq: Babylon of the End Times?; Apocalypse; and The Dictionary of Biblical Prophecy. He teaches adult Sunday school at his local church in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and preaches frequently throughout the nation.
