Good ideas for a practical chess opening

The Four Knights Defense (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6) is an intriguing repertoire choice for the amateur player. You can play it against the Petrov (Russian) Defense (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nc3), and you can use it to take your opponent out of his favorite version of the Ruy Lopez as well. It's almost a complete white repertoire against the open game (1. e4 e5), although the author does not present any ideas for responding to the Latvian Gambit (2....f5!?) or the Philidor Defense (2....d6). The Four Knights is also quite sound, having been essayed in 2011 by strong GMs such as Nisipeanu, Short, Adams, Vasiukov, Sutovsky, and Rublevsky. As the author notes, white can even play a sharp queen sacrifice against the most common black response, the Rubinstein Variation (4. Bb5 Nd4). If you follow the quieter lines, though, the Four Knights is a low-maintenance method to reach a thoroughly playable middle game against a club opponent. Please do not let me discourage you from playing the queen sac that Obodchuk analyzes, though: it leads to a fascinating fight!

Obodchuk recommends the Spanish Four Knights for white (4. Bb5). Because this book is written from the white perspective, the author omits other white variations such as the Glek (4. g3) and the Scotch Four Knights (4. d4). He does, however, present the dubious Belgrade Gambit (4. d4 exd4 5. Nd5?!), although he concludes that black can choose between easy equality (by eventually returning the pawn under favorable circumstances) or principled superiority (by keeping the pawn and playing sound defense in a sharp position). If he knows what he's doing, that is! If you absolutely must do everything in your power to get the full point as white in that last tournament round, on the other hand, you might give it a try, as black's path is complicated enough that he might very well stumble while the clock is ticking.

Obodchuk presents the repertoire and sidelines by analyzing model games. He offers suggestions for black's best play as well as white's, so black players of the open game can derive some benefit from his work.

This is the first major work by the author, International Master Andrey Obodchuk. In the most recent FIDE ratings his ELO is listed as 2404. I have not been able to find any Four Knights games by the author online, but he has studied the theory quite deeply and arrived at reasonable recommendations for the white player. Kaufmann's subsequent repertoire (The Kaufman Repertoire for Black and White: A Complete, Sound and User-friendly Chess Opening Repertoire), for example, basically accepts Obodchuk's recommendation for obtaining a slight advantage against 4...Bc5.

I would be remiss, however, not to point out that much of the author's work is presented as a database dump with little text explanation. This unfortunate practice reduces the value of the book to the beginning or intermediate level club player. In addition, he does not organize his repertoire suggestions in an easily accessible, concise way; you have to read through a lot of analysis to discover his repertoire recommendations. If you are a beginner or intermediate club player, I would suggest the friendlier introduction you are likely to find in the forthcoming The Four Knights: Move by Move by Lakdawala. Please note that I am suggesting this based on the reputation of Everyman's Move by Move series--it has not yet appeared on Amazon as of this writing. If you are a more advanced player, however, you should definitely not hesitate to purchase this book, which represents the latest and greatest theory in the opening. Advanced beginner and intermediate players would certainly benefit as well, but should consider reading Lakdawala's book first.

Not razor-sharp, but still recommended...

In preparation for a webcast I'm giving this month, I'm working through the book Eclipse by Steve Holzner (O'Reilly). While not perfect, it's a good tool for learning about the package.

Chapter list: Essential Eclipse; Java Development; Testing and Debugging; Working in Teams; Building Eclipse Projects Using Ant; GUI Programming: From Applets to Swing; SWT: Buttons, Text, Labels, Lists, Layouts, and Events; SWT: Menus, Toolbars, Sliders, Trees, and Dialogs; Web Development; Developing Struts Applications with Eclipse; Developing a Plug-in: The Plug-in Development Environment, Manifests, and Extension Points; Developing a Plug-in: Creating Editors and Views; Eclipse 3.0; Index

For the person new to Eclipse, this will do a decent job in getting you started. Up through the Using Ant chapter, the focus is primarily on Eclipse. The examples deal with the package, and that seems to be the primary focus. After that, the style seems to change a bit. The GUI development chapters seem to focus a lot on GUI programming, and then after that's finished, they show you how to do it in Eclipse. Mind you, it's good information, but the focus has shifted. The plug-in chapter gets back to Eclipse as the primary focus again. While there are entire books dedicated to plug-in development, this chapter will get you comfortable with the idea and concepts.

So is the book perfect? No. I feel that the material could have been a bit more consistent as to what the foremost goal was... learning the Eclipse platform. But having said that, it still accomplishes the goal of teaching you how Eclipse works in different scenarios. I'd definitely recommend this as an initial Eclipse text for someone.

O'Reilly swings and misses with this one

I've used big time and expensive IDEs in my time, Together Control Center to name just one, and I was excited to finally get Eclipse and begin learning it. I always look for an O'Reilly book on a subject first because they are usually really good. This book, although good, misses the point of the title of the book. It should have been titled "Intro to Web Programming with an Introduction to Eclipse".

Another reviewer pointed out that the first three chapters covers how to use Eclipse. The rest concentrate on actually using Eclipse to do each chapter's small projects - GUI, Web, and plugins.

I was looking for a book that covered Eclipse in total, how to use it, the neat stuff, everything that Eclipse has to offer. This book doesn't even tell me how to makea bookmark in Eclipse. I saw that in the Eclipse Cookbook TOC at O'Reilly.

The 3.0 coverage is minimal. This book is not about 3.0. That is to be expected since software changes faster than authors can learn the new versions and write the words.

This is a good book if you want a very gentle intro to Eclipse, but don't look to become an Eclipse GURU from it.

a dissapointment

first of all the book i got (yes i checked the isbn)
was only 317 pages and was not subtitled,
"A Java Developer's Guide" but instead "Programming Java Applications".
There was less than 20 pages coverage of 3.0. very lightwieght.
I wouldn't say this was a book for programmers, but the equivalent of a user's manual for eclipse(eclipse made EZ, or eclipse for VB programmers).
The first two chapters(60 pages) is just telling you what the menu items do. Almost all the material in this book was covered in the Manning Eclipse in Action book. The exception being this book had 3 chapters(60 pages on gui and swt), and a chapter on struts. I only kept the book for that stuff.
I get the impression this is just a knock-off that book so that O'Reilly gets some of the beginner market...
Probably not worth your time if you have used eclipse for more than 10 days...

"POWERFULLY MOVING, COMFORTING, AND INSPIRING!"

It was only 3 weeks ago that I found myself in a crisis situation in which my daughter, a severe disability, and her puppy, were brutally attacked by a stray Pitbull. I realized that I could have lost both of them. They made it through it, with my full support, and tons of TLC. While they are still healing, my daughter asked me to purchase this book, and read it together during quality time. It was only last month, when we read and enjoyed 'Angel Detox' from these authors. As we began reading 'Angel Dreams' together, I could see and feel the comfort and peace my daughter was absorbing, and we continued with extreme content, and satisfaction.

Doreen Virtue and Melissa Virtue, deliver another fascinating book that inspires and comforts throughout. The authors include personal stories and interpretations that are interesting, and enjoyable. The Introduction explains how dreams are created as we learn about healing, understanding, and growth. In addition, the authors include information on: The way we dream, myths about dreaming, dream symbols(such as flowers), and much more.

Part One discusses dream guides and creation, and Part Two offers information on the meaning of dream symbols. Also included is interesting information on: Water Magic; Rolling & Dreaming; Colors & Dreams; Music And The Subconscious; Angels In Your Dreams; and Candle Gazing.

We found this book uplifting and inspiring from beginning to end, and it is beautifully written. For the peace and tranquility that my daughter endured, this book is a priceless treasure in itself. I thank the authors for this book, and consider it a keepsake. I will indeed be gifting this book to friends and family on special occasions. Highly recommended!

Most Encouraging Book to Those Who Have Cancer.

This is an outstanding book that is most encouraging to those who have cancer. I order used copies and new copies and then distribute them to those who are taking chemo, those in cancer-support groups, and those whom I meet who have been diagnosed with cancer. I am a two-time cancer "conqueror" and wish that I had known about this book when I had cancer. Amazon and Greg Anderson's Cancer Recovery Foundation in Texas have new copies.
