From the intriguing title poem to the final verse, "We're Fearless Flying Hotdogs," Prelutsky has done it again with childwise sparkling wit. Zaniness is in abundant supply with verses about a turkey that shot out of the oven (it was stuffed with unpopped popcorn); Denson Dumm, who planted lightbulbs in his hair (and thereafter was always bright); and the child who wants a pet porcupine. But also present in delightful numbers are serious subjects of importance to children, wrapped in silliness: "I Am Tired of Being Little," "Don't Yell at Me!," and "I Should Have Stayed in Bed Today." Prelutsky's language is neither simple nor sappy, but rich with challenging words such as "disputatious" and "alacrity," whose meanings are clear in context. The poems are short and snappy (many are only one or two stanzas), and Stevenson's accompanying uncomplicated and comical drawings give the book an uncluttered appeal. Silly, goofy and fun fun fun!

This collection of Jack Prelutsky's silly and goofy poems is a must-have in any self-respecting poetry collection. The subjects of the poems range from mask-wearing earthworms to a room-trashing robot; from wishes to be bigger, to fishing in the desert. Children will laugh at the fearsome pirate "Captain Conniption," terror of the seas, who always obeys his mother. Many will sympathize with the longing of the boy in "My Brother is a Quarterback" who yearns to be a great athlete like his brother is.
"I Wave Goodbye When Butter Flies" is an excellent example of the oddities of the English language. The poem turns such common phrases as "pocket change" and "coffee break" on their ears and makes them into something new. There are subtle puns on condiments in "We're Fearless Flying Hotdogs" (can you find the one for saurkraut?). The emptyheadedly happy expressions on the five flying franks make the whole idea even funnier.
James Stevenson's line drawings accentuate the levity and absurdity of the poems. His artwork for "An Elephant is Hard to Hide" demonstrates even better than words the impossibility of stuffing an elephant into a dresser drawer. The expression of glee on the face of the boy reveling in "Mold, Mold" is identical to expressions seen in mud puddley schoolyards.
This volume is a treasure for both children and adults. It's a great way to spend some time laughing with a child (or by yourself).

My kids LOVE IT

We have enjoyed this book for several years. My second grader and my fourth grader have both memorized at least 1/3 of the poems. They have both taken up writing poetry now because they realized it can be so much fun. This book is a must have for any young family. The only reason I did not give it a complete 5 stars was that, while cute, the illustrations are not spectacular.

A book we both enjoy!

My eight yr. old loves Jack Prelutsky's poems (she has three of his books) but it is also a book that both of us enjoy reading. The poems are very funny and the words he uses are wonderfully descriptive and have expanded her vocabulary. We both highly recommend this book and others by Jack Prelutsky.

Patrick Schmidt is a consultant in intercultural relations. American by birth and education, he went after his studies to Germany, staying there for 20 years. Through his work as an English language trainer and later as editor-in-chief of two German corporate magazines, he became an intimate observer of modern German culture. From the 2nd Chapter: The German precise scheduling of time versus the American obsession that "time is money"

Both Germany and the United States are monochronic cultures, meaning they operate according to schedules, one thing at a time. However both cultures conceive of time differently. The German concept of time is not primarily thought of in terms of money. Rather, time is used for the execution of all activities precisely when they should occur. As many Germans will tell you, the best way to have anarchy is by allowing various areas of life to mix. Again, this remark reflects German uneasiness towards uncertainty and ambiguity.

Whenever a decision has to be taken, Germans will spend a lot of time and energy to clear things with all parties concerned. Once there is consensus as to a plan, operations will be carried out according to schedule. It is for this reason that the German business pace seems much slower than that in America.

Germans organize time according to work schedules and appointments and become irritated if something is not done according to plan. This rigid attitude extends to other aspects of life. For example, utility companies will not supply natural gas until November 1st, even though it might be cold in October.

Interestingly enough, university professors are allowed to be up to 15 minutes late - das akademische Viertel - before a lecture is cancelled. Germans use this concept to establish how late is "late" for a business appointment. If a person doesnt call to say he'll be late, the meeting will be called off after the same 15-minute wait.

When invited for dinner, one is expected to arrive on time. This is not to say the Germans are inflexible when it comes to unannounced changes but, in general, being a few minutes late for a dinner engagement or business appointment will be perceived as inefficiency or disinterest.

The American concept of time finds its roots in Puritan heritage. Useful activities are valuable, meaningful and moral. If one is not actively engaged in meaningful acts, one becomes useless and immoral. The famous American colonist Benjamin Franklin said: "Do not waste time, it's the stuff life's made of." His thoughts on time have had a profound influence on the American psyche. To "waste" time is very un-American; to make the hours pass by in idle conversation is considered almost shameful. The only path to success is hard work and, as always, "time is money". Time, like money, can be spent, lost or well invested.

The idea that the present can always be improved explains in large part why Americans are always in such a hurry. They want results now. Nobody wants to waste time; everything is done as quickly as possible, whether it be greetings, negotiations, or socializing. This leads to a business culture that features quick decisions, rapid implementation and expectations of completion in the shortest time possible. One constantly looks for ways of doing tasks more efficiently. Finishing sooner saves money and allows more time for leisure activities.

However the American obsession with not wasting time has spilled over into those same leisure activities. If an American sits around the swimming pool too much, he or she gets nervous and feels obliged to do something productive. The famous quotation of an American on holiday, "If it's Tuesday, this must be Belgium," reflects the absurdity of expecting to see seven European countries in a week. In the same vein, it's no surprise that the fast food restaurants, such as McDonald's, found such a great acceptance first in the US. Everything must be done efficiently and fast, even activities such as eating.

I'm German, but I have lived for some years in Maryland.
While I don't agree with every detail, I think most of the stated analyisis is true.
After reading plenty of books about German and American culture, I recommend this book as one (perhaps the) best about this issue in the market.
Even the book provided evidence about in the book mentioned cultural differences because it is much more sophicated and detailed than American books usually are.

Even Today, A Must Read for Anyone doing Business in German

In the continuous wave of globalization and `mcdonaldization', the book provides the reader with the conceptual framework for the subtle, as well as the not so subtle, perceptions and impressions people often form during their first inter-cultural experiences.

Based on the recent changes that took place in television and major retail establishments, to name a few, people vacationing in Germany could argue that Germany is not so different from the US, or vice versa. This is a misconception.

Business practices have not changed that much, if at all. This book is, therefore, a valuable resource. It is a great starting point for any newcomer to the subject. It provides the 'why' and 'how' German and American business practices are different.

It also introduces the reader to examine culture through contextual frameworks. Therefore, it is a great starting point for the student of culture studies, with a focus on Germany, who wants to learn more about these frameworks as well as the history of current business practices.

Moreover, it is a 'must read' for anyone doing business in either country for the first time. So, don't leave home without it!

An unbelievable insight into American-German relations

Engaging into American-German business ventures without first reading this book is like trying to pass a math exam without knowing the difference between subtraction and addition! All joking aside, reading this book is far more entertaining and rewarding than a typical mathematical treatise. If you don't succeed working with Germans or Americans after reading this book, then I suggest you stay within your national borders!

consistently lush

Every time I begin to write this review I start with silly gushes like "couldn't put it down." I'll try to be a little more coherent.
This is a diverse collection of skilled authors who bring their unique voices to a common theme. The stories fit very well together without being uniform. The fantasy elements aren't overbearing. In each story, the magic has a natural, sometimes subtle, sometimes strong but integrated feeling. I always had a sense that I was in a real place and time, even though there's no way for a head to be able to do that on our world. There are some fascinating, inventive ideas in this collection that kept me thinking long after I'd reached the end.
The cover art transmits the feeling of these stories very well. There's swashbuckling, romance, and a strong sense of culture (but not uniform culture--there's a wide variety of settings.) It's not entirely set in a given century or region, and one of the stories occurs at sea. It's a lush, dangerous, bejeweled group of tales and fans of lace and blade type stories will not be disappointed.
The authors are (in order of appearance): Madeleine E. Robins, Diana L. Paxson, Robin Wayne Bailey, Tanith Lee, Dave Smeds, Catherine Asaro, Mary Rosenblum, Chaz Brenchley, and Sherwood Smith.
I liked some better than others, but there weren't any stories I would skip on reread.
I'm keeping this one, and plan on rereading it many times.

I got this for the Catherine Asaro story. But I did enjoy a few of the other ones as well. Especially The Beheaded Queen by Dave Smeds. I really enjoyed that one. That was one that I wished continued into a book. I wanted to know more and how things went on from where it left off. I felt the same with The Topaz Desert by Catherine Asaro. I love her work. This is a short story based in the same world as her Lost Continent series. Ive read them all and have re read a few of them. I love the whole series. It's fantastic. The short story in this book though ends very abruptly for obvious reason. It's a short story, not a novel. But it could be one, it has the potential. I liked the set up and what it was getting to. I wanted to know what happened to them in the end and where things ended up.
