About the Author
Susanna S. Epp received her Ph.D. in 1968 from the University of Chicago, taught briefly at Boston University and the University of Illinois at Chicago, and is currently Vincent DePaul Professor of Mathematical Sciences at DePaul University. After initial research in commutative algebra, she became interested in cognitive issues associated with teaching analytical thinking and proof and has published a number of articles and given many talks related to this topic. She has also spoken widely on discrete mathematics and has organized sessions at national meetings on discrete mathematics instruction. In addition to Discrete Mathematics with Applications and Discrete Mathematics: An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning, she is co-author of Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics, which was developed as part of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. Epp co-organized an international symposium on teaching logical reasoning, sponsored by the Institute for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS), and she was an associate editor of Mathematics Magazine from 1991 to 2001. Long active in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), she is a co-author of the curricular guidelines for undergraduate mathematics programs: CUPM Curriculum Guide 2004.

Comparison of the top 3 Discrete Math Texts

I have read "Discrete Mathematics" by Epp, Rosen and Ross which are the three most common discrete math texts that I encounter at university.

Of these three, I would rate Epp's book as my favorite because it has the clearest explanations and is so easy to read that you can't help but feel like you understand all of the content completely. The only failing that Epp's book might have is that it is not as thorough in its coverage of the material as some of the more technical books. I would say that it covers about 90% of the material and leaves out some of the more obscure topics.

Rosen's book would be the most thorough, covering every topic in meticulous detail and offering a jumping point for other texts in cryptography and number theory. Although this book is more complete than Epp's, it is also less readable and requires more effort to get through. Ideally you would use Epp's book to learn the material and then go to Rosen's book for a technical reference.

For those of you who are considering Ross's book, I have one thing to say and that is don't. Although I have read this book and done a lot of the problems in the first 3/4 of the text, this book is neither clear in its explanations like Epp nor is it as complete as Rosen's book. If you are assigned this book for a course, my suggestion would be to buy Epp's book and photocopy the Ross homework problems from a friend's textbook.

Take the advice of someone who has read all three books. If you have to buy just one, then get the Epp book. It is better to understand 90% of the material completely rather than 100% of the material partially.

Good Improvements

I've taught discrete math from the 3rd Edition of this book at least 6 times, and struggled with several issues. (The textbook for our Discrete Math course is chosen by a committee in our department.) Much of a discrete math course involves looking closely at some very simple mathematics. Most of the mathematics is already known to a typical university freshman; what a set is, what a prime is, what an ordered pair is, etc. Of course they have had little rigor in these elementary topics, but still, they have the notions and vocabulary. The 3rd Edition pretended that sets, e.g., did not exist until one finally arrived at the chapter on sets. It's unnatural to lecture one's way through two chapters on logic and a chapter on techniques of proof, without being able to draw on simple examples from set theory. One gets tired quickly of examples of dogs and cats in highly artificial situations, and would like to say something about primes or the set of even integers.

The 4th Edition corrects this problem by the addition of an introductory chapter which fixes the vocabulary and notation. This was a needed change. The 3rd Edition required considerable acrobatics in avoiding words like "is an element of" until Chapter 5 (Set Theory.) Really? I'm supposed to cover the proof technique of "division into cases" and I can't say "the set of integers of the form 4k+1?" So good change.

Every semester, I get e-mails from my students asking if the previous edition of the text will suffice for my course. Usually, I say yes. In the case of my discrete math course, I'll have to say no. The modifications of this text are substantial. Besides the above, the old Chapter 8 (Recursion) is now incorporated into the new (much expanded) Chapter 5 (Sequences and Induction.) That is also a sensible change.

My remaining complain about the text is that it's a bit condescending. I think it's bad form to always present mathematics apologetically. "There, there now, I know it's difficult, but we'll go extremely slowly and take tiny, tiny bites covered in catsup so you can scarcely taste them." There's no need for us at the university level to re-enforce the bad attitudes the students learned in high school. It's math. It's hard. You can do it, not because math is made easy, but because you are, in fact, clever enough.

I would not have recommended the 3rd Edition to anyone, but I would recommend the 4th. I'm very happy with the changes.

This book brings a broad range of mathematic subjects - set theory, logic, how to write proof, induction proof, basic number theory, algorithm complexity and so on - that will benefit computer science students. Knowledge is broad but deep enough for ones to understand algorithm proof writing found in other algorithm books and certain mathematic concepts (which you may find it helpful/motivating later if deciding to have a look at/self-study some pure mathematic).

Top Notch Book on Determining Market's Direction

Price Headley, the founder of BigTrends.com, has shared many of his best market indicators with readers. I've seen Headley speak at a few Investor Expos and he not only knows his stuff, but he presents it clearly without going over the heads of the audience. He has taken the same approach with his book. I found the indicators that he reviews to be very useful in providing insight into them market direction. I have personally used a number of them myself over the years.
Not only does Headley provide the indicators, but he also includes the EasyLanguage Code for Tradestation platform users so that they can easily input his indicators on their PCs. Headley could have kept the settings of his indicators proprietary, but he chooses the high rode and shared them with his readers.
Now to the review of this book. Chapter 1 focuses on Headley's favorite contrary sentiment indicator -- CBOE Equity Put/Call Ratio. Readings below 0.4 are considered bullish and above 0.8 bearish. He also draws standard Bollinger Bands (BB) on the ratio to add another dimension to determining extreme ratio readings. He also covers the weekly ratio, as well as intra-day readings. Moreover, he explains the Total Put/Call ratio (Equity and Index Options) and how to use it to determine fear or greed in the market. Throughout the chapter Headley shows the performance statistics of each indicator over specific timeframes with complete profit and loss statistics. He uses this approach throughout the book so you can see for yourself, which of the strategies have the most bang for the buck.
Chapter 2 covers the fund flows in and out of three Rydex Funds -- Nova, OTC and Ursa. Nova provides 1.5 times the performance of the S&P 500 Index. OTC mirrors the performance of the NASDAQ 100, and URSA is inverse the S&P 500
(short fund). Headley obtains the daily funds flow data for each fund directly from Rydex and then plugs the data into a formula : (Nova+OTC)/URSA. He found that the lower this ratio the lower was investor confidence in the market. This is a contrary indicator and a buy signal. The reverse is a sell signal.
Chapter 3 introduces the CBOE Volatility Index known as VIX. It is a measure of the expected volatility of stocks based on pricing of the S&P 100 (or OEX) options. VIX is also used as a contrary indicator with high readings bullish (40) and low readings (18) bearish.
Chapter 4 focuses on volume indicators. He uses the daily QQQ, NASDAQ Composite and Spyders with their respective volumes. He graphs the prices of these items with BBs on the data to identify overbought and oversold conditions.
Chapter 5 covers surveys used to gauge fear and greed in the markets. Headley recommends taking a contrary position to the survey results when they reach extreme readings. Surveys he reviews include the Investors Intelligence Bull and Bear Index, Consensus, Inc., AAII weekly poll, and Market Vane. Performance data using these surveys is also provided.
Chapter 6 reviews Headley's favorite classic trend indicators. These include weekly and daily moving averages, MACD, support and resistance, average true range, and ADX. He briefly mentions candlestick charts using one example, and covers a few points on system testing.
Chapter 7 introduces the "acceleration band" indicator developed by Headley. He provides an explanation of the logic behind it, the EasyLanguage Code and numerous chart examples. Headley is basically taking the directional movement each day (high-low) and dividing it by the average stock price (high+low divided by 2) to obtain the directional movement of the stock or index. Also included is a discussion of moving average envelopes (similar to BBs) and illustrations of their use.
Chapter 8 covers the concept of momentum divergences. Headley uses the MACD indicator to determine his key entry and exit points, then he introduces his unique Momentum Divergence Indicator with chart examples and TradeStation code. He then combines the momentum divergence with moving average envelopes to provide his buy and sell signals. He provides charts of 10 popular stocks and their performance using these indicators.
Chapter 9 focuses on the relative strength of stocks to its comparative market index. This has nothing to do with the RSI indicator although they have similar names. Headley recommends using an RS line with 5, 10, 20 and 50-day moving averages. He provides 6 chart examples with this data and a detailed explanation.
Chapter 10 and 11 cover the basic principles of trading options. Headley provides four simple option-trading rules. He then explains option strategies in different market conditions.
The book's last chapter (40 pages) reviews the key tenets of trading psychology and money management. Topics include: building a customized trading plan, psychological issues to be aware of, and effective money management rules. Headley provides not only 10 key questions to consider about your trading plan, but also reviews the answers to each question. To help the reader, Headley provides his only personal trading rules and suggestion and his daily trading process.
The bibliography contains about reference books on all aspects of investing and trading. There is a 9-page glossary of terms, and a list of 15 websites.
In conclusion, Headley does a masterful job of providing traders with time-tested indicators, including two self-developed ones that he shares with readers. Readers of this book should be able to incorporate Headley's indicators into their trading strategies and come out way ahead of the crowd.

A common theme among all the fundamental and technical analyst books is that you need to become a Contrarian investor in order to consisitently make money trading stocks. This book provides a true blueprint for accomplishing that goal.

For those who had read over four trading books

As a trader who had read tens of trading books, I still found this one interesting and helpful. I like its variety of content (that the author introduced a lot sentiment indicators like CBOE Put/Call Parity + Volatility Index, RYDEX Mutual Fund Flows, Volume indicators for QQQ and S&P 500 Depository Receipts), plus the author's writing style and integrity (the author did quoted frequently from other writers). Some technical tools like MACD, ADX were discussed, but only briefly. In fact, I like Chapter 12 about trading psychology and money management, Appendix D favorite quotes the most.
To conclude, if you want to read an intermediate to advanced level trading book, and that you are appreciative of logical and contrarian trading, this one is for you.
p.s. I like Mark Douglas, Bernard Baruch and Jesse Livermore very much. As the author does appreciate these "gurus", I admit that my positive comment may be a little bit biased.

About the Author

Pretty good read

It's a good read answering most questions you might have about the behind the scenes shenanigans. I thought it was brutally honest. In many cases, he also interviewed others from the cast who gave their side of different stories. As others mentioned, there's a good bit of time spent discussing how unhappy Reed was, which I thought everyone knew about, but the stories about his fights with Reed bring it home. Where it loses a point or more for me is the extended​ ending of the book where each episode plot is explained. Some episodes have one, two or no stories about the episode or things happening behind the scenes. What would have made this fun would have been having at least a few stories for each episode? I almost put the book down during this part but stuck it out.

GREAT BOOK with episode info too!

GREAT read! Especially if you are Brady obsessed like me. LOVED LOVED the mini-reviews he does of every episode!!!! Lots of tid bits and trivia I didn't know. Also loved reading the scathing memos Robert Reed served to Sherwood Schwartz that Barry includes in their entireties! Gems!

Entertaining Read for Brady Boomers!

Honest and candid, Barry Williams gives us a funny, entertaining viewpoint of growing up as Greg Brady of "The Brady Bunch." What I like about this book is that he tells of his start in show business, then details life as part of "The Brady Bunch". He expresses amazement that people still love and want to see the Brady Family which resulted in several made-for-TV Brady movies with the old cast and the hilarious Brady Bunch movies with Shelly Long as Carol Brady. Of course Williams describes his crush on Maureen McCormack as well as other Brady Kid pairings once the cameras stopped rolling. It must have been frustrating for him and for the other actors portraying the Brady kids because most of them were not like their characters at all, yet the public expected them to behave that way. Can you picture that Thweet Little Thindy (Susan Olsen) is now a hard-drinking woman? Williams tells of them swapping Brady stories over drinks on an airplane. The only thing I didn't like was at the end of the book, a synopsis of each Brady Bunch episode was included to plump up the book. While that info might be useful for die-hard Bradyphiles, I would have preferred that Williams give us more anecdotes about his life as Greg Brady or better yet, life after Greg Brady, since the bulk of the book is focused on the Brady Years.
