About the Author

Fred Lutgens and Ed Tarbuck have been good friends and colleagues since 1970. Between them, they have more than 57 years of experience teaching geology to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors. They share a special interest in introducing geology to beginning students and a belief in the value of field experiences for students of all levels.

�

Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976. That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now in its fourteenth edition. In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, gifted geology illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team. Since then the three have collaborated on more than twenty projects. Not only do Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa work well together creatively; they also enjoy spending time in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Tasa’s New Mexico studio.

Tarbuck enjoys downhill skiing in Colorado, fly fishing near his childhood home in Northern Minnesota, and spending time in the Cascades. Lutgens is an avid runner, and when he can make the time, truly enjoys hiking the canyons of the Colorado Plateau. Although Lutgens and Tarbuck think alike on many issues, they don’t agree on everything. Lutgens is devoted to jazz and classical music, whereas Tarbuck prefers pop artists or a good country station.

A great geology book.

This is the first geology book I have studied. It seems to be fairly complete for an introductory text. The pictures and graphics are excellent and the text easy to follow. A point that needs to be mentioned is that the authors repeat a lot of things multiple times. This is a good thing. It negates the need to go back and look stuff up that was forgotten or missed somehow. Repetition is the key to learning. The authors have done very well in this regard.

I was under the impression that this book would cover a larger portion of the Orient. Thailand, Korea and Japan are not included at all, it solely focuses on the work of Chinese artists. Additionally, there is no text at all to give insight into the themes or styles your are seeing in the book. I thought something called a "Sourcebook" would have explanations of cultural themes and design. While that is disappointing, as other reviews have mentioned the quality is very good, both in photo content and physical construction. I considered returning it because of my misunderstanding, but after flipping through it I decided it is worth keeping as a coffee table book.

A short subjective Summary

In the short imaginary interviews conducted by Solomon in Introducing The Existentialists, I quickly discovered that Existentialism is a far more profound and in-depth philosophy then I had first interpreted it to be. To me, Existentialism has been the baseless ness of the universe, the idea to destroy the traditional patterns of beliefs and methods and to replace them with a more universal set of categorical imperatives (as Immanuel Kant would say). However, after briefly reading the earlier mentioned book, I soon discovered I was incredibly mistaken. Not only did the three philosophers (Sartre, Heidegger, and Camus) seem incompatible in many aspects of their existential perspectives, two of them even broke away from each other due to their differences in their own philosophy (Sartre & Camus). This furthered my doubt and reliability of my earlier definition of existentialism even more so, almost to the point that it felt like I have been lied to all my life about this philosophy from textbooks and history teachers in my High School. Nevertheless I discouraged the simple concept of quitting and continued to plunge into Solomon's imaginary world.
Amongst all of the philosophers, it seemed one topic held the same power and influence on the human mind. That was the topic of death wherein after one is dead one no longer exists except in the written articles left behind in the material world (Sartre). Camus seems to adopt Heidegger's philosophy concerning death, which is that death is undeniably going to occur, but it is not until one's mortality is actually at risk that one becomes more aware and petrified of the outcome of death. I found this idea the simplest to comprehend and agreed to it automatically. Another topic the philosophers seem to hit similar cords on seemed to dissipate due to terminology and mere personality complexities. This is the topic concerning the human being's ability of just `being' and the actual actions the human being takes.
In accordance to Sartre, the human being's actions are always ruled by natural causes and the actually `free will' we believe in is just a mere idea of subjectivity. For instance, if one is going to be a coward, he will always be a coward and it does not matter if he breaks those bonds of cowardice or not. Heidegger seems to go for a more pessimistic ideal of consciousness (almost everything seems pointless or wasted to him), which consists of the fact one is never really conscious of anything and is just simply in the world. He supports this argument with the entity of Daesin and being, which seemed to cause electric shocks of incomprehension to rack my mind. In fact, I was so confused with Heidegger's beliefs that I soon began to realize it means nothing at all even if I did understand him (his indifference and impersonal way of thinking portrayed a concept below the human being way of feeling). Finally I came to Camus, who relieved my past mental tensions with his good humor and simple way of explaining things.
Like Sartre, Camus seems to focus on the idea that actual free will is just a matter of subjectivity. However, instead of being indifferent to his ideals like Sartre seemed to be, he personalized his arguments with the character Meursault in his novel, The Stranger. Meursault is a simple man who falls from innocence to self-destruction due to his death. The idea seems simple enough, but I, for one, seem to have lost my innocence when I entered Elementary school. Thus, the novel itself seemed like a romance written by Hemingway. However, I quickly denounced this previous thought when Camus and Solomon speak of how Meursault does not love his girlfriend (not that he is an evil man, but what would be the purpose of love; better yet, why would he love anything when that would be absurd because it would be meaningless). Although Camus portrays Meursault as a character who understands that most, if not all, of his actions are meaningless because they will inevitably lead to nothing particular that has a point, Meursault himself seems like a much better projection of the existentialist theory than the depressing and monotone voice of Heidegger. In conclusion, I found Camus much more compatible to my adolescent methods of thinking as opposed to Sartre and Heidegger.
All of these philosophers seem to have placed my mind in a paradox unknown to me before. I now remember during my pre-teen years I used to think like Meursault (or perhaps I should say Camus) in the sense what is the point of doing anything? Not that I had evil intentions for my fellow student, teacher, relatives, whatever, but it just seemed ridiculously pointless since I was inevitably going to pass away from this physical realm (hopefully into a better afterlife than Sartre's). I also understood the possibility that there was no Hell or Heaven, which would make my afterlife a real after-life, hence nothing is happening afterwards. If it's just game over when you're playing the game of life, then why do anything at all. What's the necessity of action? It is interesting to relive these ideas, but hopefully, considering my current relationships and situation, I will not completely embrace this philosophy again.

The man addressing the crowd, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, had just returned from the heart of Nazi Germany following negotiations with Adolf Hitler, and the crowd gathered outside the English leader's house on September 30, 1938 greeted these ringing words with grateful cheers. The piece of paper Chamberlain flourished exultantly seemed to offer permanent amity and goodwill between democratic Britain and totalitarian Germany. In it, Britain agreed to allow Hitler's Third Reich to absorb the Sudeten regions of Czechoslovakia without interference from either England or France, and since high percentages of ethnic Germans – often more than 50% locally – inhabited these regions, Hitler's demand for this territory seemed somewhat reasonable to Chamberlain and his supporters. With Germany resurgent and rearmed after the disasters inflicted on it by the Treaty of Versailles following World War I, the pact – known as the Munich Agreement – held out hope of a quick end to German ambitions and the return of stable, normal international relations across Europe.

Of course, the Munich agreement is now notorious because its promise proved barren within a very short period of time. Chamberlain's actions either failed to avert or actually hastened the very cataclysm he wished to avoid at all costs. The "Munich Agreement" of 1938 effectively signed away Czechoslovakia's independence to Hitler's hungry new Third Reich, and within two years, most of the world found itself plunged into a conflict which made a charnelhouse of Europe and left somewhere between 60-80 million people dead globally.

Of course, as most people now know, the invasion of Poland was merely the preface to the Nazi blitzkrieg of most of Western Europe, which would include Denmark, Belgium, and France by the summer of 1940. The resistance put up by these countries is often portrayed as weak, and the narrative is that the British stood alone in 1940 against the Nazi onslaught, defending the British Isles during the Battle of Britain and preventing a potential German invasion.

In particular, the campaign in Poland is remembered as one in which an antiquated Polish army was quickly pummeled by the world’s most modern army. Polish lancers charging in a valiant yet idiotic attack against German tanks is the only image from the 1939 Nazi-Soviet invasion of Poland remaining in the popular imagination today. Originating as a piece of Nazi propaganda, paradoxically adopted by the Poles as a patriotic myth, the fictional charge obscures the actual events of September 1939. Outnumbered, outgunned, and under-equipped, the Polish army nevertheless inflicted heavy losses on the invading Wehrmacht. In fact, only the unexpected advance of Soviet forces from the east put a quick end to the struggle.

Good overview and the end of some myths

Having read some "Charles River" books, I am getting used to them. They usually produce a very good account of the subject, with a good selection of sources and some photos, images or maps. I read one of their books on a subject I had read a lot about before, and being very satisfied with that one, I took it as a standard.

Their books are not to be expected as complete, comprehensive works, but lean more toward a good overall short account. Choose one if the subject is new to you or you want a good overview. They appeal to me as good introductions, or if I have no intention of reading long works on a specific theme. That said, I like them and think they're very effective in providing good information as well as a good read.

They have produced other books, including those listed below, that provide good information on earlier developments of the Nazi regime, and then on the final moves before the outbreak of war:

1. (1923) The Beer Hall Putsch: The History and Legacy of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party's Failed Coup Attempt in 1923

Excellent account

This is an excellent, well written, meticulously researched account of the manufacturing of a world war. This is what several world leaders wanted and they got it. It is unfortunate that there were duped back then - not unlike the naive dupes of today. Chamberlain promised peace in his campaign for the prime ministership and when he gave in to the Nazi he claimed peace for the world. What an self deluding buffoon. He reminds me of Obama and Kerry today with the misguided lunacy of the Iran deal.

This writing also delivers the heart-wrenching travails of the Polish people as they were squeezed between Hitler and Stalin. How horrendous, how sad.

This is a story that should be told in every junior high, high school, and college history class! I ask, are we repeating history because we neglected to teach it and learn it?

This book is a diamond in the rough. It's written by a man who has been there and done that. Ron James tell you his story, his way, taking you through the many difficult choices he had to make in his life. But what makes this book and this author so special is the honesty with which he tells his story, and his unwavering desire for you to learn about the choices that face you. Bravo! A wonderful, and meaningful read!

a wonderfully inspiring book!

This book is a brutally honest look at the choices Ron James has made in his life and the people they have affected. He accepts full responsibility for these and blames no one but himself for all that has happened. He also lets us know that no matter how deep of a hole we dig for ourselves, it is the power of God that can help us get back on the right track. The final chapter of the book was most intriguing in how Ron describes the effects that easily accessible drugs have on our society and where we could be heading as a country if we don't get handle on it. It is quite a vision, but I can truly see us heading in that direction. I highly recommend this book to anyone who may have made some poor choices in life - which is most of us - as this was so encouraging to me.

Ron James' is brutally honest in his telling of his life's journey, the choices that created the man he is today. You will find yourself captivated from the start, so much so you may find yourself (like me) devouring the whole book on your first read. While reading I found myself evaluating my own choices, and contemplating my relationship with family, friends, and God. This book will challenge the reader to make a change within themselves. One that will lead them, like Ron James' closer to their loved ones and more importantly to Jesus Christ.

For my journey into shogi, starting 2-1/2 years ago, this book proved invaluable. I've now read it through carefully twice, the second time to cement the illustrated castle formations, and browsed several sections repeatedly. This and the Hidetchi shogi lessons on YouTube made a big difference in my play. I study other shogi books now, especially tsume shogi puzzlebooks from Japan, which can be understood without commentary, and a couple other prizes with English translation, but this Shogi for Beginners stays up with the others for all its information and historic game records that are fun to play through. We started a Portland Shogi Club, and keep Shogi for Beginners on hand as the first book for a beginner to see; like it says.

This book will teach you the rudiments of this elegant and challenging game, but goes far beyond them

Shogi is almost unknown in America, but is one of the great games of the world. Unlike Go, the foremost board game ever invented, Shogi can be played much more quickly, but has as much depth as chess. This book will teach you the rudiments, but goes far beyond them to teach the various strategies that have been worked out over the years (much as books on chess openings do). It has a number of problems so you can try out your skills on them. If you like board games, I heartily recommend this excellent little volume. It is one of the first books in English about this elegant and challenging game.

Excellent entry into Shogi

I enjoy the privillage of having been tought Shogi by a japanese gentelman who is attempting to expand Shogi to Iceland. Having learned the basics from him I was desperatly looking for a book that leads you through basic tactics such as castling and climbing silver and found all that I wanted in this book. The first chapters also include simple and straight forward explanations on the game so this book is an excellent entry into the world of Shogi.
