Happy Accidents: Serendipity in Modern Medical Breakthroughs, by Morton A. Meyers

What do penicillin, chemotherapy drugs, X-rays, antidepressants, and Viagra have in common? They were each discovered accidentally, found in the search for something else. Winston Churchill once said, Men occasionally stumble across the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing has happened. Happy accidents take place every day, but it requires intelligence, insight, and creativity to recognize a Eureka! moment when it occurs, and to know what to do next.

Drawing on personal experience, research, and interviews with winners of the Nobel Prize and other prestigious awards, Morton A. Meyers uncovers the surprising role of serendipity in four major fields of medical advancesinfectious disease, cancer, heart disease, and mental disorders. He exposes the factors that stifle innovation and proposes steps to foster a more creative approach to science. It may just save our lives!

From Publishers Weekly
Meyers, professor emeritus of radiology and internal medicine at SUNY–Stony Brook, has a simple message: the most significant breakthroughs in medical research usually came about when people were looking for something else entirely. Lithium's effect on bipolar disorder, for example, was discovered because a scientist was taking advantage of its solubility to run toxicity tests on patients. Likewise, Viagra was developed during experiments on medications designed to treat angina. Meyers has dozens of stories like this, in the areas of antibiotics, cancer treatments, cardiovascular therapy and antidepressants. The anecdotes are lively and filled with miniportraits of important doctors like Paul Ehrlich (who pioneered the use of chemistry to develop medical treatments) and Arthur Voorhees (who stumbled onto the treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysms), but some chapters feel forcefully wedged in. The role of accident in creating the thalidomide molecule is glossed in one sentence, and too little information is given about contemporary research into the therapeutic use of LSD to draw any meaningful conclusions (although it's a good excuse to revisit the story of Albert Hofmann's bicycle ride). But it will be hard to argue with Meyers's criticism of a rigid scientific culture that discourages experimenters from keeping an eye out for the unexpected. (Apr.)

From Booklist
To radiologist and internist Meyers, the phrase creative scientific research has become an oxymoron in today's culture of research grants, peer review boards, pharmaceutical companies, overly regimented education, and scientific journals. Rebuffing all that, he details dozens of medicines currently saving millions of lives that are the results of serendipity, which he defines as "chance plus judgment"--medicines discovered while researchers were looking in quite another, often the opposite, direction. To be serendipitous, he says, a chance discovery must be accompanied by the researcher's "ability to recognize an important anomaly or to draw analogies that are not obvious." Creativity is key. In interviews with several Nobel laureates, many readily admit applying so-called post facto logic to the sequence of their reasoning when they make their presentations because, Meyers notes, getting to a new idea is not a linear process. Meyers' accounts of such happy accidents as the discoveries of the lifesaving anticoagulant Coumadin, the manic-depression therapeutic lithium, and others is a significant brief on creativity's critical role in medical research. Well Written Book, Many Examples of Serendipity in Medical Discoveries
By James A. Magner
I really enjoyed this book! The author, Morton Meyers is a physician who obviously loves this topic. I have been interested in the history of science and medicine for years, and I enjoyed informally "collecting" anecdotes about famous discoveries. I am a physician and 62 years old, so I have heard and "collected" a lot of anecdotes ---- but Dr. Meyers presents many new details of anecdotes, so I was surprised by the nuances that he was able to provide. He obviously has spent a lot of time preparing this book. Also, the accuracy is excellent, and the book is written in an entertaining style. The 25-page Introduction is a fascinating essay in and of itself. There follow four major parts of the book, with a 20 page well-written Conclusion section. There is a 3-page selected bibliography, and then a detailed index. The book covers at least 39 specific instances of serendipity in medicine, and several were ones about which I had previouly heard very little. So this book was a lot of fun and well worth the time. I have always been interested in use of anecdotes for educational purposes, and I was delighted years ago by Richard Feynman's books, such as "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman." Walter Glatzer wrote a wonderful collection of short scientific anecdotes called "Eurekas and Euphorias" that also was very entertaining. I used this style of humorous and instructive anecdotes in my own autobiography, "Chess Juggler: Balancing Career, Family and Chess in the Modern World." A reader who is interested in "Happy Accidents" also would enjoy those other three books.

By Sertorius
Happy Accidents is the best book I've read this year. I eagerly devoured it in a couple of days. The book is basically a history of medicine in the twentieth century with a focus on the hypothesis that most of the important discoveries and advances have been the result of chance, serendipitous observations by researchers motivated primarily by scientific curiousity rather than review committee directed research and development. In developing this theme of serendipity, I presume that the author must have been inspired by the book Serendipity: Accidental Discoveries in Science by Royston Roberts, reviewed below(q.v.), a similar book published in 1989, also fascinating in similar vein. Happy Accidents is a fine complement to its predecessor because the earlier focused more on organic chemistry and dreary industrial processes, while Happy Accidents is the grand pageant of medicine in the twentieth century, as told in vivid detail and literary style by its author, a practioner of the same field as me--radiology! It's inspiring that radiologists can have such sparkling erudition, but not at all suprising.

Happy Accidents surges forward with and anecdote-driven, lively style. The stories and histories are richly supported with footnotes and references, which provide a portal to further reading. Books referenced in the footnotes will probably supply much of my reading well into the next year. The author shines light into so many obscure corners of medical history, not covered in standard popular histories. I had considered myself quite a student of medical history, but Meyers shattered my illusions and expanded my knowledge by some fifty percent! And I agree with one of the other reviewers that this book should be a part of the medical curriculum for students. For me personally, the history of how different therapeutics were discovered and why they were developed when they were lends understanding more valuable than the voluminous registers of facts one is force fed in the modern medical curriculum.

Meyers also weaves an interesting thread of cultural history into his narrative, when he closely examines the barbaric ages of lobotomies and electroconvulsive therapy. In true Stalinist style, these "treatments" were often used to punish dissenters and non-conformists under the malevolent guise of "therapy". Another story along these lines that I have read about was Lou Reed's "treatment" with electroconvulsive therapy for showing homosexual tendencies. Later, Meyers offers some shocking social history about the involuntary experiments with LSD performed on hundreds a Americans by the CIA under director Sidney Gottlieb. Great stuff.

As to the basic premise of the book, the importance of serendipity cannot be denied, but I question whether this warrants a whole new outlook on the investigative process. A large number of discoveries and inventions (CT, MRI, ultrasound) have been the product of directed research and development. And some of the scenarios the author labels "serendipitous" seem more goal directed to me. For example, when Fleming discovered penicillin, he made a chance observation, but he WAS researching antibiosis, and he discovered antibiosis, albeit in a slightly unexpeced place. Otto Loewi's famous experiment proving the existence of chemical neurotransmitters was part of the natural sequence of the hypothesis forming/testing procedure started by Dale and his British colleagues. And sadly, I wonder whether serendipitous observation is a faculty that can be learned and developed, or whether it is an inborn trait like mathematical ability, which one either has or has not.

Altogether, Happy Accidents is an entertaining, informative, thought provoking book that should be read by any physician or medical student. I was wishing the author would write more books in similar vein, but I aleady see that he has just published a new book, Prize Fight: The Race and the Rivalry to be the First in Science (Macsci), which I will download for my Kindle ASAP!

The Boy Who Dared, by Susan Campbell Bartoletti

A Newbery Honor Book author has written a powerful and gripping novel about a youth in Nazi Germany who tells the truth about Hitler

Bartoletti has taken one episode from her Newbery Honor Book, HITLER YOUTH, and fleshed it out into thought-provoking novel. When 16-year-old Helmut Hubner listens to the BBC news on an illegal short-wave radio, he quickly discovers Germany is lying to the people. But when he tries to expose the truth with leaflets, he's tried for treason. Sentenced to death and waiting in a jail cell, Helmut's story emerges in a series of flashbacks that show his growth from a naive child caught up in the patriotism of the times , to a sensitive and mature young man who thinks for himself.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6–9—In the newly formed Third Reich, Hitler's initial political doctrine is filled with hopeful solutions for a country plagued with unemployment, poverty, and a post-World War I feeling of defeat. Propaganda and promises quickly turn to oppressive new laws including the required participation in the Hitler Youth. Helmuth Hübener enters the program and is at once impressed with the bravado, shiny uniforms, boots, and patriotic fever sweeping the country. But his Mormon-based teachings trigger questions in his mind about the reality behind the regime's invasions of neighboring countries, mistreatment of Jewish citizens, and closely controlled media. He creates an underground newsletter with information gathered from BBC reports using an illegal shortwave radio. As he secretly distributes the flyers throughout the town, his boldness encourages him to gather several accomplices resulting in his arrest, trial, and execution. The novel opens as he is on death row, and the story is told as a series of flashbacks. Helmuth is portrayed as a brave, outspoken voice amid a family of acquiescing brothers, mother, and new SS stepfather. Based on a real person, the novel includes black-and-white photos of Hübener and his family. Bartoletti offers another perspective on the Holocaust, demonstrating that even if the effort proves unsuccessful, the courage and convictions of a minority should be motivation to speak the truth rather than remain silent. It's a message that must be continually emphasized as a lasting legacy of the Holocaust.—Rita Soltan, Youth Services Consultant, West Bloomfield, MI

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler’s Shadow, Booklist’s 2005 Top of the List for youth nonfiction, 2005, Bartoletti included a portrait of Helmuth Hübener, a German teenager executed for his resistance to the Nazis. In this fictionalized biography, she imagines his story as he sits in prison awaiting execution in 1942 and remembers his childhood in Hamburg during Hitler’s rise to power. Beaten and tortured to name his friends, he remembers how he started off an ardent Nazi follower and then began to question his patriotism, secretly listened to BBC radio broadcasts, and finally dared to write and distribute pamphlets calling for resistance. The teen’s perspective makes this a particularly gripping way to personalize the history, and even those unfamiliar with the background Bartoletti weaves in–the German bitterness after World War I, the burning of the books, the raging anti-Semitism––will be enthralled by the story of one boy’s heroic resistance in the worst of times. A lengthy author’s note distinguishes fact from fiction, and Bartoletti provides a detailed chronology, a bibliography, and many black-and-white photos of Helmuth with friends, family, and members of his Mormon church. This is an important title for the Holocaust curriculum. See the Booklist interview with Bartoletti, in which she discusses how this teen’s story moved her. Grades 6-12. --Hazel Rochman

Returning to material she uncovered while researching Hitler Youth, Bartoletti offers a fictionalized biography of Helmuth Hübener, a Hamburg teenager who, in February 1942, was arrested for writing and distributing leaflets that denounced Hitler. Almost nine months later, on October 27, at the age of 17, Hübener was executed for treason. Opening her story on Hübener's last day, Bartoletti frames the work as third-person flashbacks, casting over the narrative a terrible sense of doom even as she escalates the tension. She does an excellent job of conveying the political climate surrounding Hitler's ascent to power, seamlessly integrating a complex range of socioeconomic conditions into her absorbing drama of Helmuth and his fatherless family. The author also convincingly shows how Helmuth originally embraces Hitler. His disillusionment seems to come a little too easily; American readers may wonder why Helmuth's reactions were not more common. But that question resolves itself as the author exposes the chilling gap between her own admiration for her subject and reflections, discussed in an afterword, from those who knew Helmuth, as in this comment from his older brother: “He should have known better than that.... A sixteen-year-old boy cannot change the government.” Ages 11-up. (Feb.)

Keep your head
By J. Castro
I really enjoy reading stories based on true life experiences. Though the end is evident from the beginning, you are taken through the life and challenges of a young German youth who wants to know and share the truth about how the Nazi's are misleading and beguiling the German people as to what is actually happening in WWII. This teenager refuses to succumb to the lies about the Jewish people and to the required behavior of the "Nazi Youth" of which he is required to become a member. He values his immediate family and his true friends. Knowing his own inevitable fate he does everything he can to save his two dear friends...who later help to tell his story. It is an excellent story to teach todays youth to think for themselves and cherish in their heart and their life what they know to be good and true and right. Not to be beguiled by the gang mentality and see that no matter what, to stand for righteousness.

A Very Special Book
By Kut&So
A thoughtfully written book about a very brave young man who lived a brief life of courageous resistance to the evils of Naziism during WWII.
The book is based on a true story. It is written clearly, it lets the facts of his life speak for the lessons to be learned. I was left with awe, gratitude, sadness, and admiration for this young man and for others like him of all ages who have stood up to evil.

It's one of the books that touches you for the rest of your life. I will not forget this story.
I recommend it to anyone.

Notes for Christian Homeschoolers
By J. Bosket
We are homeschoolers with a Christian worldview. I bought this book for my son (14) while we are studying WWII and specifically because it is about a boy's experience in Nazi Germany. So many books about WWII are just about girls or Jews and I was looking for another perspective. FWIW, we are also reading the Boy in the Striped Pajamas and will reference the Diary of Anne Frank and The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom.

The things I like about this book is the "fleshing out" of how the Nazi's spread their propaganda and lies. I appreciate the main character's continual questioning of the things he experiences. I have made copious notes on the factual information behind his experiences. I appreciate how he struggles with his faith and how it stands contrary to so much of what is going on.

If you are a Christian Homeschooler, you need to know that Helmuth and his family is Mormon and he refers to articles of the Mormon faith throughout the book. While I know some will argue that Mormonism and Christianity are the same, one merely needs to read the 13 articles of the Mormon faith to differentiate this. That said, the articles of faith referenced contradict Nazi propaganda and further the plot of the book as the basis for why this boy turns "traitor" as defined by the Gestapo. A conversation with your student regarding the articles of faith discussed would be advantageous and this is not detrimental to the book...although some references were confusing and are worth fact checking and discussing. The author herself is not Mormon, and because this is a true story and his faith was foundational to his life, it is an important part of the book and rightly included in the telling of the story.

Would I recommend this book to other homeschoolers studying WWII? Yes. I feel it is a great way to understand the propaganda machine of the Nazi's and the fear it incited in those who might have disagreed, forcing too many into silence as millions of Jews were slaughtered.

About the Author

Marge Lial (late) was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Her desire to educate both her students and herself inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, was most recently affiliated with American River College. An avid reader and traveler, Marge’s travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She was particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks, involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, and now after more than twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching andmathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy, as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

David Schneider has taught mathematics at universities for more than 34 years and has authored 36 books. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a PhD in mathematics from MIT. During most of his professional career, he was on the faculty of the University of Maryland—College Park. His hobbies include travel, dancing, bicycling, and hiking.

Callie Daniels has always had a passion for learning mathematics and brings that passion into the classroom with her students. She attended the University of the Ozarks on an athletic scholarship, playing both basketball and tennis. While there, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education as well as the NAIA Academic All-American Award. She has two Master’s degrees: one in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Missouri—Rolla, the second in Adult Education from the University of Missouri—St. Louis. Her hobbies include watching her sons play sports, riding horses, fishing, shooting photographs, and playing guitar. Her professional interests include improving success in the community college mathematics sequence, using technology to enhance students’ understanding of mathematics, and creating materials that support classroom teaching and student understanding.

Current college student taking College Algebra
By M. Martin
I STRONGLY suggest you RENT this textbook. I rented it for around $25 from an Amazon marketplace seller. Unless you are a math major and love to collect math books, do yourself a favor - save some money and just rent this textbook. The suggested retail price of this textbook is insane, even used it is insanely expensive. Just rent the textbook, it will save you a ton of cash. Plus you won't have the burden of selling a used textbook, that you most likely will not get all of your money back out of. RENT IT!

I am currently taking College Algebra at my local community college, one night a week. I graduated high school in 2002, went to college for several years, but have yet to successfully complete college algebra (had to drop the class twice). I have always struggled with math, especially Algebra. I am a visual learner. Once I see a problem worked, either in person or in a book, I will understand it.

With this textbook, I am really struggling to understand some of the exercises. Some of the exercises are not thoroughly explained in the review. How can they expect you just to learn how to solve for H, with the area of a trapezoid using a linear equation - if they don't give an example? I honestly hate how textbooks do this! Now, my instructor only assigns a handful of odd numbered exercises. I of course complete the required exercises, but on my own - I work the rest of the exercises, even and odd. This textbook only provides the answers for the odd numbered problems. There is an issue with the answers in the back of the book, the sections are literally separated! For example, there are answers to "Solutions to Selected Exercises" for chapter 1.1 on page S-3. Then there are "Answers to Selected Exercises" for chapter 1.1 on page A-3. Why they separated these answers/solutions, whatever they want to call them, is beyond me. It can be confusing, how do you know if it is going to be in the Solutions or Answers section? I can not offer any advice other than to get you some 3M tabs and mark both sections. That way you will at least be able to differentiate the two sections easily.

So for you students that are like me and really want to learn the material, for the knowledge and the grade, I STRONGLY SUGGEST you purchase or rent the 10th EDITION ANNOTATE INSTRUCTOR'S EDITION (ISBN 978-0321501486). The Instructor's Edition contains all the answers to the even and odd numbered exercises. The answers are contained in the back of the textbook (solution and answers are in separate sections too) and the answers are also in the margin on the actual page. So, on page 89 - the answers to exercises 17-58 are in the margins. It is important for me to mention that the so far, from what I have seen, the material and exercises are the same (only reviewed up to section 1.4 so far). There are nine noted differences in the preface of the 11th edition. Some mention that there are new diagrams, new art graphics, some new exercises, etc. I have not yet found any of these differences, but I am sure I will. The most noteable difference between the 10th and 11th editions, is the size. The 11th edition is larger.

If you struggle even a little with College Algebra, get your required textbook for class AND get the Instructor's Edition to keep at home. I choose to have the required textbook because I want to literally be on the same page as my instructor and classmates. I choose to keep the Instructor's Edition at home because 1) I don't want to be bombarded with questions from anyone on what it is, 2) I don't want anyone to think that I am cheating, 3) I don't want to give anyone any reason to report me as cheating on the tests. So if you do purchase the instructor's edition, consider keeping it at home. If you are an online student, still get the book you are required to have. Point is, just use the Instructor's Edition as a supplement to check your answers.

Next item is the Student Solutions Manual, ISBN 9780321791382 - RENT IT! This textbook provides the SOLUTION to the odd numbered exercises. It doesn't just provide the answer, it details what the solution is that results in the answer. This will help you understand the exercises that the textbook never reviewed. I have rented this textbook as well. This an excellent resource to have at home to check your answers. If you have answered an exercise wrong, you can check the solution to see what you did wrong. I have used solutions manuals just like this before, they saved me from worrying about if I got a exercise wrong or not. This book, I will take to class with me. This is specifically published for students to use. Keep in mind, if you rented your 11th edition textbook, you only need to rent the Student Solutions Manual (if it is cheaper to buy instead of rent, do that).

Only buy the kindle version if you have a kindle!
By Amazon Customer
Do NOT buy this kindle version unless you have a kindle or tablet and are prepared to ONLY read it from the tablet! Amazon has prevented the ebook from being opened in kindle cloud reader, meaning that you can only read the ebook on your phone or tablet or kindle. They have not changed the formatting in order to even make this feasible, meaning in order to read the ebook you have to constantly zoom in and out, which makes it very difficult to read or study or even do homework problems. This is exceedingly frustrating and makes everything much more difficult. Ebooks are supposed to be MORE convenient, not less!

Poorly written and organized book
By Bleeksano
THE 2 OUT OF 5 IS FOR THE AUTHORS OF THIS BOOK AND NOT THE SELLER. I dont like this book at all. The examples are super easy, and the examples are completely different. You will get really really frustrated with this book be warned. Get the solutions manual. Between the solutions manual and youtube, I was able to figure it out. Often, really important details are casually buried in a paragraph of text when it should have been highlighted. Poorly written and organized book but it's for college so had to get it.

Very good read, love Cheryl, but also quite sad
By Michael Dulin
This book starts out with Cheryl growing up on a council house in Newcastle during some very hard times (this must have been during/after the mine closures) and seeing some of her friends die from heroin, her brother go to jail and herself in a couple of toxic relationships. On the bright side she also became an auntie for the first time at the age of 16 and enjoyed dancing and singing.

What's sad about the book is that she wished to be famous and a pop star for so long yet it seems like it ultimately made her unhappy. The paparazzi were especially brutal to her, spreading nasty rumors and constantly invading her space even during her most vulnerable times. She took a hike for malaria and ended up catching it herself the next year. She was invited onto US X Factor only to be fired after a few episodes for no good reason at all.

She is about to turn 30 a few days after this writing and all signs point in suggesting her retirement. As an American I'll probably never get to meet her or even see her perform, which sucks. I hope her and Tre Holloway settle down and start the big family she's always wanted so she can finally be happy. :)

A book about an extraordinary strong woman.
By Olga Levin
When reading the book I just could not help but think about how similar Cheryl's family situation was to mine. We both have half siblings, and when reading that part in her book about how her family reacted that one of her siblings was really her half sibling, that just put a smile on my face and just reminded me about how I dealt with the same situation with my two younger sisters when we found out that our older sister is really our half sister. And that bit of news came up at a already horrible time in my family.

I didn't know who Cheryl Cole was up until I just happen to stumble upon a UK X-Factor video on YouTube several years ago. What really appealed to me about her is how emotionally intelligent she is and how she connects with her fans. Even for me who instantly jumped on the Soldier wagon here in the U.S. I have found some areas of her past like that I could relate to which she writes about in her book. I normally don't read biographies about current day film stars or musicians, I'm more of a history buff kind of person. So I'm happy to say that Cheryl's book was the first current day musician biography that I've read. I found it to be a joy to read.

Cheryl Cole's: My Story book
By Helen G. Sien
My daughter is SO fascinated and and captivated by Cheryl Cole's life story; she has a hard time putting it down to even eat her meals. After she gets her homework done, after she has watch all her "Girls Aloud" DVDs, she will shower and read her new book until she is ready to go sleep. This is one of the rare books she has shown so much interest in reading, which is a huge plus in my opinion; she will even read out loud to me so I can hear what "hits home in her heart" as to what she has come across within the chapters.
My prediction is, she will most likely read the entire book again when she is done reading through this first cycle in her new adventure; this book is worth every penny it costed, especially if it can change someone to become so addicted to reading when it was rarely seen previously.
