A Pleasant Surprise!
By Sean C
My parents bought me this book for Christmas because they saw the author's name on another book that I had been reading on a visit, and because all the books on my Amazon witness seemed to lean into a world they didn't want to encourage (it was a lot of queer theory and Marxist stuff; not what gets evangelical parents excited). It's a book about TV; who wouldn't want that!

Well, generally me. I spent the better part of my undergrad attending and contributing to the meetings of a certain association that studies both popular and American culture, and by the end of undergrad had become increasingly frustrated with the lack of honest rigor to almost all of the analysis out there. At a certain point, I just became totally disinterested in analysis of popular culture; even the most respected academics I encountered seemed to simply engage in a kind of smart-sounding fandom.

I say all this simply to highlight the fact that what Kotsko has written here is far from that. In fact, if one reads this book, one might find that what seemed lightweight due to its subject matter and avoidance of unnecessary jargon sneaks in a both cogent and rigorous analysis of human sociality and possibilities for political act.

Anyway, just read it.

Indispensable and insightful cultural criticism
By Josh
Despite the bounty of the Internet, it's still hard to come by thoughtful and enjoyable criticism of pop culture at book length. Most of the really heavy hitters right about music -- consider Greil Marcus's books -- but there's precious little when it comes to either comedy or television. This book (and its follow-up Why We Like Sociopaths) is among the best in class -- like the best long essays, it builds an argument slowly, carefully and -- crucially -- enjoyably, and after a few chapters in, you've not only got a whole new way of looking at the comedy of the past ten years but you also understand a fair bit of Heidegger.

Very Interesting!
By Dakota Flournoy
Kotsko's style of writing and subject matter are extremely accessible and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. He brings up so many things I had never even thought of before, like America's history of awkwardness and where it has left us today. Very thought-provoking but still sort of a baby project. I hope he returns to this essay in the future to expand his ideas further.

From Library Journal
To Love a Child is the heartwarming story of one man's commitment to a child that had been declared not adoptable. Then three years old, the child was born addicted to drugs, his mother had been murdered, and he had been dubbed all but a throwaway. Here, writer Schwarz chronicles the events of one remarkable year?from the day before he met his son to the day the courts legalized the adoption. During that time, the Schwarzes took in another child. Exhibiting a broad range of experience, Keck, founder of a treatment center for children with developmental problems, and Kupecky, Ohio's 1990 Adoption Worker of the Year, together examine many issues affecting today's adoptive families. They address various phases of the adoption process: early issues in the adoptive family; age-specific problems, as well as solutions; and clarification on issues of parenting or working with the abused or damaged child. Throughout, numerous case histories are cited. Both books include superior resources, readings, and index arrangements, and both are recommended for all libraries.?Marty D. Read This Before Adopting Older Children!
By A Customer
As an adoption educator, adoptive parent of three (3) special needs children, as well as a birth mother in reunion, I recommend ADOPTING THE HURT CHILD to all prospective adoptive parents. Society tends to sugar-coat adoption, believing that adoptive parents are saints and the adopted child should be grateful to have a family. Unfortunately, particularly when adopting older children, adoptive families are not well-equipped nor adequately prepared to appropriately deal with all of the emotional, behavioral and/or psychological issues these children hold within themselves. When the child begins to act out aggressively, rebelliously or sexually, we/society, tend to criticize the child for not being appreciative of the new life he's been given, or dismiss the behavior, reverting to the old "bad blood" concept from times long past. Often, these special needs children seem to be typical to outsiders, acting out only in the home environment. ADOPTING THE HURT CHILD gives readers insight into how these children became hurt and offers sound advice on not only dealing appropriately with the child's behavior, but on seeking professional help, how to set parameters, exercise patience, creating a safe and nurturing environment and more. As an adoption educator, I utilize this book as a basis when teaching workshops on adopting special needs children and it continues to bring better understanding, as well as empathy and compassion to both the adoption professionals and prospective adoptive parents whom I train. I also give this book as a gift to all of my children's physicians and therapists so they, too, can better treat my children. This is a book written in the true sense of "the best interest of the child." I encourage you to read this book and share it with everyone in your support circle of friends, family and health professionals. Education is the best tool we have to promote understanding.

A Landmark Book on Attachment & Adoption
By A Customer
Two years ago, we assumed guardianship of my husband's troubled 12-year old niece. She was my husband's sister's child and came from a "House of Horrors." Every conceivable problem existed. Drug abuse, domestic violence, sick pornography, sibling incest, severe parental neglect, sarcasm, ridicule, brutality and denial. She came from the inner city, to our sheltered, happy home in the suburbs. It was akin to someone moving to a foreign country. Fortunately, I read "Adopting the Hurt Child." The book was a lifesaver. I do not exaggerate. Social workers and incompetent therapists seemed to blame us for her problems, (and we hadn't had her for even a year). The authors said this is common. Adoptive parents take the heat for the original family's neglect. The authors nailed every single issue, or problem, with razor sharp accuracy. Our niece is an actress with attachment issues. She wears masks. She plots, she cannot "be." She was never taught real love or how to be with people. Her presence in our household really shook us to the core. She acted coquettish and manipulative with my husband; snide to me (the mom). I do not see the book as negative, but as candid. Love isn't always enough. Movies may have happy endings, but real life is altogether different. Sometimes, these children do not get better. At least, empowered with the advice of this book, you can seek better therapy treatments, know what kind of therapist to hire, and sniff out the bad ones immediately. Now, two years later, we found an attachment therapist. This terrific therapist cannot be manipulated. She is both tough and compassionate. We made more progress with her -- in three sessions, than our niece did with a sex abuse counselor in a year. Our niece still has many problems, and time will tell. We are hanging in there. And I still reference this book. It's just superb. God bless both the authors.

A Must Read for Anyone involved in a Difficult Relationship
By A Customer
This book is a must read for anyone involved in a difficult relationship due to childhood issues or anyone thinking about adopting a child. I purchased it because my husband and I are thinking about adopting a Special Needs child. This definitely helps you to think long and hard about your possible parenting capabilities with a child with Special Needs. I definitely related to the Dreams and Realities Chapter, which has caused me to really evaluate what I am hoping to accomplish in my life with this adoption. Additionally, the chapters on identifying specific behaviors was a real eye opener for me. Although my ex-husband did not come from an adoptive family, I believe he had a lot of the characteristics of a child with Attachment Difficulties. I may have been able to help him, if I had thought of his problems at this level rather than dealing with our problems through marital counseling (how sad to discover this too late.)This is just simply an honest, informative book helping to educate people before taking such a major step in life. Also, this book provides possible answers to the difficult situations we may face in the future. I completely admire the total dedication to a child's needs that this book focuses on.

Laurie Moran listened as the teenager in front of her practiced her high school French. She was on line at Bouchon, the newly opened French bakery that was around the corner from her Rockefeller Center office.

“Jay voo-dray un pan chocolate. Make that deux.”

The cashier smiled patiently as she waited for the young woman to string together her next request. Clearly she was accustomed to these clumsy attempts by customers to practice their French, even though the bakery was in the heart of New York City.

Laurie wasn’t feeling quite as patient. She was meeting with her boss, Brett Young, later this morning and still hadn’t decided which story to pitch first for her show’s next special. She needed as much time as possible to prepare.

After a final “mare sea,” the girl left, a box of pastries in hand.

Laurie was next. “I’ll be ordering in anglais, s’il vous plat.”

“Merci,” the woman said fervently.

It had become a tradition that on Friday mornings she would stop at the bakery and bring in special treats for her staff—her assistant, Grace Garcia, and her assistant producer, Jerry Klein. They were grateful for the selection of tarts, croissants, and breads. After she placed the order, the cashier asked if she cared for anything else. The macarons looked delicious. Maybe just a few for Dad and Timmy after dinner, she promised herself, and as a treat for me if today’s meeting with Brett goes well.

•••

As she stepped from the elevator on the sixteenth floor of 15 Rockefeller Center, she realized how the layout of the Fisher Blake Studios offices reflected the success of her work this past year. She used to be in a small windowless office, sharing an assistant with two other producers, but since she had created a true crime–based “news special” focusing on cold cases, Laurie’s career had taken off. Now she had a long row of windows in a spacious office filled with sleek, modern furnishings. Jerry had been promoted to assistant producer and occupied a smaller office next door. And Grace kept more than busy in a large open space just outside. The three of them now worked full-time on their show, Under Suspicion, freeing them from other run-of-the-mill news programming.

Grace had recently turned twenty-seven but looked even younger. Laurie had been tempted more than once to tell Grace she didn’t need to wear all of the makeup she meticulously applied every day, but clearly Grace preferred a personal style quite different from Laurie’s classic tastes. Today, she wore a multicolored silk tunic over impossibly slim leggings, with five-inch platform boots. Her long black hair was pulled into an I Dream of Jeannie topknot, teased into a perfect fountain.

Usually Grace lunged for the bakery bag, but today she did not. “Laurie,” she began slowly.

“Something wrong, Grace?” Laurie knew her assistant well enough to recognize when she was upset.

Just as Grace was about to explain, Jerry stepped out of his office. Standing between Jerry’s long, lanky frame and Grace in her sky-high heels always made Laurie feel short, even though she was a slender five-foot-seven.

Jerry held up both palms. “There’s a lady sitting in your office. She just showed up. I told Grace to schedule an appointment for her at some other time. For the record, I had nothing to do with this.”

A cleverly written whodunit that has a fantastic cast of characters (4.5 stars)
By K. Branfield
All Dressed in White is the latest addition to Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke’s Under Suspicion mystery series. In this outing, the cast and crew of the cold case TV show are profiling the unsolved disappearance of a bride who vanished five years earlier.

Television producer Laurie Moran is about to pitch her latest ideas for the next episode in her popular television show when Sandra Pierce drops by her office in hopes of convincing Laurie to feature her missing daughter’s case. Dubbed the Runaway Bride, Amanda Pierce vanished without a trace the day before her destination wedding and no one has seen or heard from her again. Despite a thorough investigation, the police could not say with any certainty that foul play was involved in her disappearance, but Sandra remains convinced Amanda’s fianc Jeff Hunter murdered her for financial gain. Once all of the members of the wedding party and Amanda’s family agree to participate in the show, Laurie, along with her cast and crew, head to Palm Beach to reenact the events leading up to Amanda’s disappearance in hopes of solving the case.

Laurie is no stranger to losing a loved one to murder and she understands better than anyone Sandra’s need for answers about her daughter’s disappearance. Laurie’s preliminary research supports the theory that Amanda did not leave under her own volition but with a plethora of suspects, which includes not only Jeff, but his current wife (and Amanda’s best friend) Meghan White, and Amanda’s sister Charlotte, Laurie still has a lot of work ahead of her. New clues emerge after reviewing the security footage from the hotel, but there is still very little evidence as to the perpetrator’s identity. During the course of the investigation, it also becomes apparent there are several members of the wedding party who are harboring secrets they are reluctant to have revealed.

The pool of suspects is vast and the information that Laurie uncovers does not help narrow down her list or their possible reason for murdering Amanda. Jeff is a natural suspect since he stood to gain a vast fortune in the event of Amanda’s death. His rather quick marriage to Meghan also paints him in an unflattering light but does that also make him a killer? Meghan also falls under suspicion considering her marriage to Jeff but Laurie also discovers the two women were quarreling in the days leading up to Amanda’s disappearance. Close friend Kate Fulton is afraid a secret she is keeping will be exposed but does this have any bearing on what happened to Amanda? Jeff’s groomsmen are obnoxious and seemingly harmless but their actions are also closely scrutinized throughout the investigation. A surprise suspect emerges after the wedding photographer remembers his assistant was not initially questioned after Amanda’s disappearance. News about the murder of a student from the same campus where several of the key players attended college piques Laurie’s interest but is there any connection between that long ago homicide and Amanda’s case?

Intricately plotted with a fantastic cast of characters, All Dressed in White is a cleverly written whodunit. This engaging and fast-paced mystery will stymie readers as Laurie and her team investigate their latest cold case in hopes of discovering the truth about what happened to missing bride Amanda Pierce. Another excellent collaboration from Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke that old and new fans of the Under Suspicion series are sure to love.

Everyone's under suspicion on this reality show
By Paul Mastin
Mary Higgins Clark, best-selling author of dozens of mystery novels, has recently teamed up with Alafair Burke for a new series, the Under Suspicion novels. In the second title, All Dressed in White, the titular TV show, Under Suspicion, features the cold case of the Runaway Bride. Five years ago a wealthy bride-to-be disappeared from the resort where her elaborate destination wedding was to take place in mere hours. No body ever turned up, but the mother of the bride had never given up searching for her. The groom, on the other hand, married the missing bride's best friend two short years later.

The reality TV show gathers the family and wedding party together at the same resort, revisiting the scene, asking hard questions, and seeking answers that investigators never were able to find. Clark and Burke cleverly build the story through the show's interviews with the friends and family, and with carefully placed conversations and interactions. Like any good mystery, they spread the suspicion around liberally, but carefully conceal the identity of the real culprit to the very end. (If I read more mystery novels, or maybe if I were just more clever and/or devious, I probably would have figured it out earlier.)

I like the way Clark and Burke tell the story. They include very little action for most of the book. The story is told through the interviews and investigation. Building toward the climax, the action climbs exponentially. I thought of those indoor bike races, where it looks like the races are cruising along easily for most of the race, all keeping a similar pace, until the last little bit where they furiously race to the finish. All Dressed in White is an entertaining, suspenseful read. I enjoyed the Under Suspicion characters and would definitely look forward to meeting them again next time Clark and Burke decided to put their minds together.

Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

Highly recommendable Crime/Mystery novel!
By Brenda Telford
Under Suspicion had become very successful in the short time Laurie Moran had been running the show. When searching for their next cold case in the series to investigate, Laurie had been approached by Sandra Pierce, the mother of a young woman who had been touted in the media as “The Runaway Bride" – five years previously Amanda had been with her family and bridal party at The Grand Victoria Hotel in Palm Beach in the days before her big day. Then with only one full day left until the ceremony, Amanda had vanished.

As the Under Suspicion team researched and investigated, their preparations took them to the Florida hotel, where they were to recreate the night of Amanda’s disappearance. Even though the members of the original wedding party had moved on with their lives, they had all agreed to come together to try to discover what had happened. Along with Amanda’s fianc now being married to her best friend, also a member of the wedding party, Laurie could tell the vibes from other people within the group were varied. The jealousy and blame, theories and speculations were intense – Laurie and her team, including host Alex Buckley knew this mystery would deepen; the lies would intensify, before the truth would hopefully be exposed…

When I read the first in this series, The Cinderella Murder by author Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke I thoroughly enjoyed it. Book #2, All Dressed in White is another gripping instalment; I’ll be continuing with this series! Filled with twists and turns that lead the reader first one way, then the next; I found I couldn’t put it down. All Dressed in White is a fabulous crime/mystery novel which I have no hesitation in recommending highly.

A look into Lucian's dark past....
By Jackie ODonnell
I was given a free ebook copy for an honest review. Sky Corgan does it again! Finally we see a deep sureal side of Lucian. I love how this one ended. Of course I want more. Amy and Lucian are in each other's arms and opening their hearts. But will this happiness last or will there be a twist. I hope these lovers do not spiral away from one another. The magnetic energy between the two of them must not be denied or tossed away

THE DARKNESS REVEALED !!!
By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis
Wowza! Flesh is a riveting new series by Sky Corgan and it is smokin hot! I love it! In Book One, Corgan expertly sets the stage for her story with an introduction to Flesh, an amazing experience for those who would like to safely test the waters in the world of BDSM with as much or as little as their heart desires. And oh my good glory, is it ever sexy! In Book Two, Corgan now delves into the development and personality of the characters. In Book Three, Corgan begins to build the heat to a slow sensual burn! In Book Four, Corgan begins to kick up the heat! In Book Five, as the heat blazes and attraction builds for our two main characters, we see more of their individual personalities, their fears and desires. In Book Six, Corgan begins to reveal the true nature of Dr Lucian Reddick and the darkness of the beast that lies within him. In Book Seven a surprising and totally unexpected connection is revealed that further complicates an already complex personal/work relationship between Lucian, Derrick and Amy. And now in Book Eight, Corgan finally reveals the dark secret and heart breaking guilt Lucian holds within his heart and soul. No, no no! No spoilers from me! But I will say this...I cried my eyes out! Oh my! Somebody call 911! Sky Corgan is a woman on fire and judging by what I've read so far, this is only going to get better! Good Golly Miss Molly - I am now officially hooked - hook, line and sinker! The story is exciting, thrilling, enticing, compelling, riveting, erotic, sensual and steamy. And did I say hot? Well, it's HOT! The dialogue is smart, seductive, arousing, very well written and flows effortlessly. The characters are fascinating, captivating, engaging, intriguing and sexy as sin. Corgan uses her amazing talent, unparalleled skill and unique style to brilliantly combine these elements into a wonderfully entertaining and superbly satisfying read. Amy Underwood is in a rut. Her life is boring and she hasn't had sex in seven years. She loves her job as an interior designer and decorator at Environ Design and Derrick, her gay, work boyfriend is great but none of that satisfies her sexual needs. God, so pathetic! Her roommate Janice finally convinces her to sign up for a session at Flesh but good lord, she's never even had sex unless she was in a relationship. How in the world is she supposed to be naked in front of some stranger much less participate in some kinky BDSM scene. Oh well, maybe she could just dip a toe to see if the water is warm. Just one time, that's all. Maybe then her roommate will stop bugging her about it. Yep, she'll try it once and never go back. Or will she? But her mysterious, sexy one night only Dom, only known as "Sir", just may have something else in mind. Oh my! Was their chance client meeting strictly a coincidence or was it "strictly" set up by none other than Mr Mystery Man himself, wealthy, well known plastic surgeon, Dr Lucian Reddick? Hmmm.......I wonder??? It seems the dominant Dr Reddick has plans for the lovely shy Amy Underwood. And what are those plans? Well, I don't like to give spoilers but I will say that we see much more of what he has planned for the lovely innocent Amy in this installment but I suspect the best is yet to come! And his plans include a lot more than working with her to redecorate his home. He definitely wants to sample her beauty and see how the creamy flesh of Amy's body looks draped across his bed! A perfect accent to the room decor - especially if she's tied up and waiting for him! It seems the irresistible Lucian Reddick is very involved in the BDSM lifestyle and wants Amy to be involved as well. He invites her to Fleshfest to try to initiate her into his world. Amy doesn't like what she finds at Fleshfest especially when she discovers another woman in Lucian's lap! What? But the innocent naive Amy struggles with the morality of the BDSM lifestyle and unlike her roommate, is not eager to become a willing participant. She would never become a submissive and participate in a staged scene in front of other people! Never say never! But just what will Amy do to keep her job! Or is her job just an excuse to continue to see the handsome Lucian? Me thinks Amy doth protest too much! Amy has already dipped a toe to test the water but she better know how to swim because she's definitely in deep water and apparently she can't decide if she wants to sink, or swim with Sir. But Amy has no idea that within the handsome Lucian Reddick lies a blackened tortured soul with dark desires - for her! Will those desires cost her everything - her job, her friendships, her sanity, her very soul? Which path will she choose? Or possibly, who will she choose? Hmmm.......Yowza! And that little rascal Derrick, he is just a stinker but a lovable stinker! I guess we'll find out more in Book Nine! I can hardly wait! Oh, Oh, Oh! It's just so exciting! I was turning the pages so fast, my IPad couldn't keep up! I can't get enough of this series! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Flesh Part Eight (The Flesh Series Book 8)
By unicorn64
This was to be Amy's last time at Lucian Reddicks house and she was sure her resolve to end it was good. He has her wrists in his hands and she says she is leaving. Just then the door bell is ringing and a gorgeous blond bombshell in a red dress with sunglasses at at the door. Lucian tells her this is a client and he only needs a little time with her. That he wants to talk more with her. She agrees to wait. Sure enough Lucian doesn't take too long. She toys with listening but then doesn't and ends up in his bedroom where she looks at the pictures he always has laying face down. It looks like a wife and child. When he starts calling her name she doesn't put the picture down and he catches her looking at it. She tells him she is your wife and that is your little boy. He admits it is. And of course she is feeling bad about what they did because she fells he is separated or something and waiting for her to come back, that she was just a pass time till his wife returned. He then told her they were dead. She sort of forced him to tell her the story. He went on to tell her how they were madly in love but fought as many married people do and she took Issac to the store and then got gas and got caught up in an armed robbery and she and his son were shot as were four other people. He couldn't even remember what stupid thing they fought about . How he felt guilty that if they hadn't had a fight it might not have happened. She had mixed emotions and though Lucian had promised not to force her again she should have left but she didn't. She asked him why he didn't just put the pictures away because sooner or later she would see them. He said she was the first woman he had brought to his house and didn't want his wife to see what he was doing.. She keeps talking to him trying to comfort him and he doesn't want her to leave. Gradually they work into making love. He started out like normal and she said she wanted romance. He said he didn't do romance very well. But he did romance better than he thought. She allowed him to continue wanting it as much as he did.. He had told her that she reminded him of his wife. She was sweet, shy, and so forth. She didn't like it when his face was even with her stomach but he said he loved her stomach. He even told her that maybe other men just had not treated her correctly. Then she realized that he had made love to her rather than just f**king her. She also realized that the pictures were all in the upright position and his wife was watching because she had put them all in the upright position.. He had even admitted that he had feelings for her. He asked her about her boyfriend and though she felt she was hurting Derrick she admitted there was no boyfriend. He seemed happy with that. When they were done he got up and she figured he would get dressed and tell her to leave but he did not he was leaving the room an she asked where he was going, he said to get them water because he was thirsty. She said then I will have to dress and leave and he said no. They would take a shower together and he was going to keep her there all night so she could fall asleep in his arms and wake up in his arms. He went to get them their water and she thought maybe things would work out between them after all.

This has been a wonderful story. Amy's feelings are so real and as we learn more about Lucian things begin to fall into place. It is going to end better than I thought after the last part. It contains sexual content not suitable for those under 18. And this part didn't even contain any BDSM. It was totally good. I relate to Amy's feeling both her body image problems and her feeling for Lucian. I can't wait for part 9. 5 stars for Sky Corgan once again.

The (original) price is right for this one
By Milbury
Time has not been kind to Sonic the Hedgehog. Once the flagship mascot for a proud power player in the video game industry, today this franchise is best known for its long string of poor quality releases and for the eccentricities of the types of people who gravitate to it. Sonic & Knuckles is perhaps the best game from Sonic's "golden years", a true classic even today in spite of the countless re-releases. I purchased this guide in a fit of whimsy, finding it for a much lower price that it normally sells at and thinking that in a worst-case scenario, I could just turn it for a mild profit. So what does it have to offer today, some 22 years after its original publication?

The answer is: it depends. Credit where credit is due, this is a well put-together guide. It's in all color at a time when black-and-white was still the normal (a testament to the popularity this franchise enjoyed at the time) and covers its subject in admirable detail. The Sonic games have never been particularly difficult (at least not for their target audience; going back and trying to play them as an adult, I find my reflexes are now too slow, ha ha) and this guide is not strictly speaking necessary. The few of today's gamers who still enjoy platforming titles could probably make even shorter work of this game than my generation did. So from a technical perspective, this guide is superfluous. But if you happen to be a Sonic fan (for whatever reason), you will likely find this guide a treat. It is stocked with character art and segments are written in the perspective of the player characters, though this works against it in the case of the Knuckles segments due to the writers overusing the word "mon" in an attempt to stress the character's Jamaican-inspired personality.

Though this guide has a big fat "Only $9.99!" emblem on its cover, it usually tends to sell for low double-digits, in the $20 to $30 range. For that price it's really only recommendable to hardcore Sonic fans. For the price it was originally marked at or lower, though, it makes a fine addition to the library of any classic gamer. If your reflexes have atrophied, as mine have, you may even find yourself making use of it!

I like how it makes the different characters the ones writing the book it isn't just some person from BradyGames and it shows how Knuckles was supposed to be Jamaican
