His first exposure to the platform was as one of its first customers in the UK in 2008, when he built a custom ITSM application. He enjoyed the experience so much that he joined the company. Now, he works with a variety of clients, ranging from blue-chip enterprises to SMEs, helping them utilize the power of ServiceNow. Martin is passionate about helping people make an informed choice and enjoys speaking at ServiceNow user conferences. He lives in the beautiful Berkshire countryside with his wife, Sarah. They both love exploring the world and enjoying good food and great wine!

Probably OK for Version Eureka but not so much for ...

Probably OK for Version Eureka but not so much for Version Fuji (current version) since most of the basics have changed. "Personalize" has changed to "Configure" in Fuji version and this book talks about "Personalize" on nearly every page (I'm 45 pages in so far). I'm walking through the "Hotel" example provided in the book and I am struggling with getting much of it to work properly in the new version.
EDIT: I have taken this from 3 to 1 stars. The example the author uses has MANY mistakes. They skipped the step for creating a MENU and then tell us to use the menu. They Tell you to use a table but they provide the WRONG name ... they made us rename that table in another exercise.

Just got my copy in the mail yesterday. I had a raw edition for a while so I have been through the first 4 chapters pretty thoroughly. This book is EXACTLY what ServiceNow has been missing. Mastering ServiceNow walks you through the entire architecture of ServiceNow from the ground up. That is not something you will find in the Wiki. Best 50$ you could spend on your SN education.

Good framework to extend ServiceNow understanding

I recently completed this book, though I admit to not performing all the hands-on bits included in the text. The ServiceNow platform is quite extensive, and it would be impossible to write a comprehensive guide that covers all aspects of the platform, but Martin does a very good job of covering the basics and providing an overview and best practices in many different areas.
The book is written for those with some experience with the platform, and I would not recommend it as an initial starting point. You should first have taken at least the System Administration in ServiceNow training or have several months hands-on experience in the platform. Also, as pointed out in some other reviews, do be aware that the book was built around the Eureka release of ServiceNow, and the Fuji release has *significant* changes, particularly around application creation, which is a key topic in the book. If you are working on Fuji as I was when I did work through some of Martin's examples, be aware of the changes and that some things will work very differently. I expect the Geneva release will contain further improvements and refinements as well. Unfortunately the pace of technology limits the shelf-life of any technical manual. That being said, many of the principals and best practices Martin suggests are applicable regardless of version.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and even learned some new tricks that I didn't know about after working with the platform for about four years. Martin builds a great story around the Gardiner Hotel and has some great scenarios around which he builds out the examples. As a reader, I wish he focused more on this as he built out the narrative throughout the book. In some places he went off on tangents where he could have introduced and built more on his ongoing example. For example, Chapter 7 covers "Securing Applications and Data" and has a decent introduction before it jumps into "Understanding roles" and starts to feel a bit like the wiki. Why not introduce the concept of roles through the Gardiner Hotels example? Perhaps even create some personas to help exemplify the purpose of roles and when someone wouldn't have a role.
The hotel example provided many great examples, though, and they do build on one another, so if you skip any bit of the samples, you may not be able to do things exacty the way they appear in the book. Some pieces did appear to be missing as well. This could perhaps be fixed with some sample files to insert information. For example, "This section builds on information from Chapter X. If you did not follow along with those examples, you can apply Update Set X to prepare your environment for these steps." There were some typos and other errata that I have provided feedback on to the publisher. I encourage others to do the same to help improve potential future versions of this book should Martin decide to try to keep up with upcoming releases.
Everything still seemed to flow pretty well until the final chapter, which covers "Automating Your Data Center." After everything else that was covered in the book and aligned pretty well with the story, this chapter felt like it was tacked on as an afterthought. Kind of an "Oh, we should also include something on automation bits like Discovery and Orchestration." It felt really out of place.
Would I recommend this book to ServiceNow Admins and Developers? Absolutely. Just be aware that some of the topics are not for beginners and that specifics will change as the platform evolves. Anyone working in these areas should learn something new, and Martin's prose in some areas of the book are more entertaining than you would find in typical reference materials.
