From the Author
Glossophobia is the Fear of Public Speaking. The word comes from the Greek glÅssa, meaning tongue, and phobos, fear or dread. It's a word, not a disease, and it can be overcome.
The Bad News
This fear can negatively affect your personal and professional life. Passing on opportunities to make presentations puts you behind others who accept that challenge.
We perceive really great speakers to be Experts. Perception is reality, and we prefer to work with Experts. You do want to be perceived as an Expert!
Missed speaking opportunities are missed business opportunities and missed career opportunities.
People who regularly take and make speaking opportunities grow the perception they are Experts and grow their businesses and their careers
The Good News
There are proven ways to lessen the Fear of Public Speaking.
I wrote "No Sweat Public Speaking! to be the ultimate guide to Developing, Practicing and Delivering 'Knock Your Socks Off!' Presentations.
We look at the components, parts and elements of a Speech/Presentation. I name them, explan them, and give examples.
The Fear of Public Speaking is addressed and a host of ideas are given for handling this.
Finally, a large number of presentation tips are provided that, when utilized, will WOW the audience.
My hope is that people who read the book will keep it as a reference and use it frequently to make their presentations - No Sweat!
From the Inside Flap
For the inspiration to write this book, I owe much to the many speakers who:
- Don't write their own Introduction.
- Write their own Introduction, but poorly so.
- Don't have a Strong Opening to their Presentations.
- Don't have great Content.
- Have great Content, but don't Deliver it Well.
- Take Questions after Closing their talk.
- Have non-memorable Closings.
- Deliver Nonverbal Communication that is not in sync with their Verbal Communication.
- Who use line after line after line of bullet points in a slide presentation, and read each of them to their audience.
- Who use slides with a font so small it can't be read.
- Use props incorrectly.
- Distribute handouts before they speak so the audience can read with the speaker, behind the speaker, and ahead of the speaker.
- Use "ahhs" and "errs" and other fillers when they should be pausing and making no sounds.
If it were not for having done many of these things myself, multiple times, and seeing so many others do the same, I might not have written this book.
It pains me that I didn't know better. Many others don't know how to present their ideas.
I know there are tens of thousands of presentations, with great content for target audiences that were delivered in a way that made it almost impossible for the audience to understand and process the message. The reason for this unfortunate fact is that the speaker didn't possess the presentation skills necessary to convey their message. It's frustrating to the audience and the presenter.
I believe there are thousands of presentations, with superb content that would benefit specific audiences, yet have never been presented. They've never been delivered because of the Fear of Public Speaking. This is unfortunate. Their great information is never disseminated and a person's career is often held back because of this fear.
Presentation skills can be learned!
The Fear of Public Speaking can be overcome.
If fear or lack of skills is holding your back from reaching your goals, this book will help!

Should be read by anyone in the influencing business
By Michael Burroughs
Twenty years in the making, this wonderful book is fresh and powerful. If influencing others is a part of your role in life, this is the book for you. If you are a leader, communication is the medium of leadership, and this book is for you.
I once was responsible for effective presentation instruction at a US Army school for mid-career officers. How I wish I had been able to provide all of my students a copy of this book at the outset, but Fred Miller was not an author then. "No Sweat Public Speaking" demonstrates that there is never the final word written or spoken on any important topic. Fred Miller's book is the right book at the right time for a whole new generation of influencers rising through the ranks.
As an executive recruiter, I will be providing all new executives I place with a copy of this book.
If you are an MBA student, buy this book. If you are a PhD candidate who will one day be required to present your ideas to your peers (not to mention your students), read this book. If you are a sales professional, read this book. I could go on...just get and read this book.

Speaking Made easy
By RJ
This book is essential for anyone wanting to become a better communicator or speaker.
Fred has a unique way of communicating, in a step by step process, everything from A-Z that is needed to become an effective speaker or communicator. As for as being a former Toastmaster, Fred not only talks the talk but walks the walk. He shares with his readers insight and things that took him years to learn. It was clear to me that he wrote this book to help someone improve their skills but also to avoid pitfalls and mistakes that shave years off the learning curve.
I believe this book is must for anyone desiring to become a better communicator and should be required reading for all public speakers.
Thanks for taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge in your book, "No Sweat Public Speaking!"

Fred Miller knows his subject. The experience shows. He organized the book to be easy to use and understand. He convincingly shows us that good speaking skills can be learned, practiced and delivered. Most importantly, the book shows good speaking is not out of reach for readers. You'll enjoy the ride, too.
