Five Uniforms is based on the true story of one man's experience through the entirety of World War II. Torn from his family as a young boy during the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, Kaz fights his way across Europe in four different armies--Polish, Russian, German, and British. Follow in his footsteps as he is pushed to the limits of endurance and learns to survive as both a soldier and a prisoner of war. In the USA and in Russia, WWII is always presented as the war of choices, of good versus evil, and it has taken on a mythological aspect that obscures the reality that most people were apolitical until they no longer had the choice of remaining so.This story about the author's father makes it clear that whatever the great leaders of Europe were doing, the common man was just trying to stay alive, and that that mattered as much, or more, than the grand landscape of "history." The description of rural Poland at the outbreak of the war is also fascinating, in that the Poles have such a great reputation and long, long history of science and advanced scholarship (think of Copernicus or Marie Curie) that it is incredible to learn of the poverty and ignorance existing in the rural villages at the outbreak of WWII. The author's father's example of going from an illiterate rustic to a multi-lingual leader through only a short opportunity for training and learning provides a good answer to the old "nature versus nurture" question of human ability and potential. Surely without WWII his life would have been very different, and in many ways less rewarding. This is a book that should prompt a lot of reflection among those interested in history, and WWII in particular, and also those interested in a fascinating human interest story. Contains 12 photographs.

Honor thy father big time

The author combines real life stories from his father with a rare talent to create dialogue that accurately portrays the characters and a gripping account of the episodes that chronicler WW II events. One is left with feeling that Eric's father was a remarkable survivor who lived by his wits and ability to make his mark thru five uniforms.

Fascinating book!

What a fascinating book! This is based on the true story of Kaz Lichota’s unique experience during World War Two, fighting with various armies on both sides of the war. The author does an outstanding job of describing Kaz Lichota’s perspectives as a sixteen-year old Polish boy during the war. The book describes the scene when the Nazis invaded and the Polish men were ordered to meet at the town square to fight them. Kaz reported with a pitchfork, and his childhood friend brought a big stick and a kitchen knife. They were illiterate, did not have access to information or media, and went up against the Nazi army with household tools. The author also did a great job of describing life in Poland before the war and the experience of the POWs in a Romanian labor camp. Particularly heart-breaking were the experiences of women both before and during the war.
Overall, I would highly recommend. I always enjoy reading first-person accounts of WWII and this book had a very unique perspective.

Many books about World War II as seen from the bottom up are about the experience of a G.I., a British Tommy or a German Fritz, serving their national army and following it through often bloody battlefronts. This book is different. It builds on the unique experience of a Polish teenager who survived, almost magically, the onslaught of the German army (twice!), the Russians and finally the Allied troops in France's Normandy. For the young Pole, the experience was one of careful observing what is initially the enemy and constant learning under most trying circumstances. There are many nuggets for the experts of World War II going much beyond the story of one soldier, like the deadly treatment of Russian prisoners of war by the Germans in disregard of the Geneva conventions. The book is hard to put down once the story starts.
