I agree with the previous review, the editing is pathetic. I wasn't sure if the author was converting stories told by someone else into print without the aid of a spell checker, but it detracted from the narrative and it isn't mentioned that the stories are transcriptions. The tone is academic, further detracted the reader because of the elementary mistakes making the two incongruous.
The sad quality of the photographs also bothered me, I used a magnifying glass to try and see into the overexposed snapshots. The Van Cortland house photo was the best of the reproductions. If it was an effort to convey the dark and eerie side of the city it failed.

As an introduction to this fascinating subject there are numerous examples and the research is extensive, but I would recommend other titles to prospective readers.

Reads like a poorly edited history textbook...

The book is okay. Very informative, atleast! However, the font style and size used in the print makes it very difficult to read. It seems as though the author/publisher/printer/whoever tried to give it an "eerie" look, but it just resulted in giving me a headache!
As for the ghostly stories, the history behind them is excellent and makes for a very interesting read. Unfortunately, it seems as though the author (although I cannot confirm this) opened up a few old books and copied what was written verbatim. There are no personal touches here. It is very cut and dry, often making me wonder how much the author truly knows of these places about which she writes. Also, many of the tales are two pages worth of history and back story with a sentence at the end saying something along the lines of, "And, once, John the custodian saw a spectral image float by the stairs." Not much of a ghost story if you ask me!
The editing is where this book really falls flat. There are countless mispellings and grammatical errors. I found myself rereading a section of nearly every page trying to decipher what it was exactly Lanigan-Schmidt was trying to say. This doesn't make for a very enjoyable read when you're forced to try and translate someone's poor English!
All in all, a book worth reading if you really want to know where to find some NYC Ghosts. Other than that, completely boring and unengaging.

Absolutely beautiful. Time slowed and ill always be thankful for this book. There are many parts that hit me from a normal persons perspective not a left wing liberal educated if you can call it that, writer critic. Art can be criticized, but you dont need every word spelled perfect to feel the beat others are blind to. 1 2 3 4 dont stop reading! dorks
